NITE STATES ATENT DAVID E. MERRILL AND JOHN G. THOMAS, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,885, dated October 9, 1888.
Application filed October 22, 1887. Serial No. $253,065.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DAVID E. JHERRILL and JOHN G. THOMAS, citizens of the United States, residing at Jamestown. in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in washing-machines, and has for its object to provide for the firm and secure fastening of a tub-stand to the machine and the easy manipulation of the same; and to such end the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective of a washing-machine with the stand attached; Fig. 2, a perspective of the hinge, port-ions of the stand and machine-leg being shown in dotted lines; Fig. 3, a side View of the hinge with part of the stand in dotted lines.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a washing-machine of an approved form having the legs B, and O designates a tub-stand secured thereto. This stand is adapted to swing up against the side of the tub when not in use, and when in use is supported horizontally by means of a hinge which secures it to the machine, the stand having no legs and needing none to its support. The hinge devised for the purpose consists of the plate D, having an extension, E, extending laterally therefrom at a right or other angle that will render it oper ative if the extension is used. This extension has a pivot-pin, F, which enters a suitable socket formed, say, in the inner side of the legs, so as to permit the plate or hinge to turn or swing. One side of the plate'is provided with flanges G, constituting the upper and lower walls of a groove which they form in (No model.)
the side of the plate, said groovebeing open at its forward end and preferably formed at the rear with a shoulder, H, against which may abut the ends of the side I of the stand, composed of said bars and cross-rounds J, the side bars being secured to the hinge by bolts or screws passed through them and a hole, a, in the plate. The plate is also provided on one side-say on the side opposite to the groovewith a flange, projection, or stop, K, preferably formed or located at or about the point where the extension E departs at an angle from the plate. This projection or stop is designed to bear against the front of the leg when the stand is thrown into ahorizontal position, and thus hold it in that position. The lateral extension to which the pivot-pin is connected permits the stand to be thrown into an upright position and lie closer to the body of the machine than otherwise.
The hinge formed as described is not only simple and strong, but is cheap to construct and easy and quick of application. It also forms a strong and firm support for the stand, preventing the same from vibrating or Wabbling. V
We have described in detail and with particularity the construction of the hinge; but by so doing we do not mean to restrict ourselves to exact details where changes can be made therein without departing from our invention.
Having described our invention and set forth its merits, what we claim is- The combination, with the washing-machine and the tub-stand, of the hinges composed of the plates D, having the sides of the stand secured thereto, and the extensions E, provided with pins F, to enter the sides of the tub-legs, and the stops K on the sides of the hinges to bear against the fronts of the legs when the stand is in a horizontal position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
