BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,356, dated September 2'7, 1892.

Application filed April 23, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN J. KRAETZER, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a full specification.

My invention consists of an improvement in buckles designed especially for arctics and overshoes; and it consists in the special features of construction hereinafter set forth in detail.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a plan view of the draw-plate. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tongue-plate. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank of the tongue before the retaining ends are bent. Fig. 4: is a vertical elevation of the tongue and tongue-plate partly open. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the tongue and tongue-plate open, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the draw-plate attached to the tongue and tongueplate.

A is the draw-plate, having a series of transverse slots and bars, with either one of which bars the tongue of the other member of the buckle is adapted to engage. This draw-plate is fastened at one end to one flap of the overshoe.

B is the tongue-plate, fastened at one end to one flap of the overshoe and having attached to its other end the tongue 0. The tongue 0 has arms a d c. The tongue 0 is preferably made of spring-steel or other resilient mate rial and is connected by the arms 0 d c to one of the bars Z) of the tongue-plate B, as shown in Figs. 4. and 5. The central arm is Serial No.430,360. (No model.)

bent so as to grasp one side of the bar 12 and. the bars 0 o are bent so as to grasp the other side of the bar e. The extreme ends of the arms 0 d c are sharply bent, as shown in Fig. 4, to retain the tongue in its position. The extreme simplicity of the buckle makes it a very desirable article of manufacture, as the three original blanks are easily stamped from the metal out of which the buckle is to be made, and the parts are easily put together for use.

The construction and arrangement of the parts is such that when the tongue 0 is shut, as shown in Fig. 6, it is held in place by its spring ends 0 d c.

I claim- 1. A buckle consisting of the combination of a draw-plate, a tongue-plate, and a tongue having springarms grasping said tongueplate, substantially as described.

2. A buckle provided with a tongue-plate having a tongue with spring-retaining arms,

substantially as described.

3. A buckle provided with a tongue-plate having a tongue with arms 0 d 0, whose ends are bent about a bar of the tongue-plate, whereby a bar of the tongue-plate is firmly grasped and the tongue held in position, substantially as described.
