UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. SYLVESTER, OF BROOKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN S HOE-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,165, dated December 11, 1877 application filed November 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, CHARLES F. SYLvEsrER, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to a fastening device for boots and shoes; and consists in a fastening device composed of an elastic strap, a holding-piece having prongs to enter the shoe, a slotted end piece, and a hook-piece, the holding and end pieces having cars, which are folded or shut upon the strap, and caused to adhere thereto by means of burrs or equivalent notches.
Figure 1 represents, in top view, a fastening device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a side view, and Fig. 3 an under-side view, thereof; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6, details, showing the holding-piece and end piece and hook piece as struck from sheet metal and before they are bent into the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3.
The holding-piece is composed of a blank, a, as shown in Fig. 4, it having an ear, I), and two prongs, c d, the ear to be bent under and backward, to embrace between it and the portion 2 of a the end of the elastic strap 0,
While the prongs c d are bent at right angles from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Fig.. 2, so as to enter the upper or a tab or strap of a shoe, after which the prongs are clinched, as shown in Fig. 3. At the outer or free end of the strap 0 is an end piece, f, composed of a plate having ears 9 h and a slot, '5. These ears g h are folded under the. main part of blank f, so as to pinch and bind the elastic hand. These ears I) g h, when folded underneath, are made to grasp the elastic strap 6 (see Fig. 3) between themselves and the-main portion of each blank a or f; and
in such condition the ears are indented or punched, as shown at Figs. 4, 5, at Z, to cause the metal to project from the cars, so as to engage and hold the elastic strap firmly. The hook-piece j is composed'of a plate having a projection, k, which is subsequently folded, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to form a hook, p, to enter the slot 1; of the end piece f, and of prongs m n, to enter the strap of a low-cut shoe, or a suitable portion of the shoe upper. The blanks are folded on the dotted lines.
I claim I As an improved article of manufacture, a shoe-fastening composed of an elastic strap, a holding-piece having an ear, I), and prongs c d to enter the shoe, and slotted end piece having ears 9 h, and the hook-piece j, having a 1 hook, p, and prongs m n,to enter the shoe, the; ears being folded upon the ends of, and made to securely hold the ends of, the strap by means of burrs or indentations, all substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 6th dayof November, A. D. 1875. r
G. F. SYLVESTER.
