COMBINED NAPKIN RING AND HOLDER. No. 483,331. Patented Sept. 27, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALPHEUS MILLARD SPAULDING, OF NORTH BELGRADE, MAINE.
COMBINED NAPKlN RING AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,331, dated September 27, 1892.
Application filed November 5,1891. Serial No. 410,339. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALPHEUS MILLARD SPAULDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Belgradc,in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Oombined Napkin Ring and Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists of a combined napkin ring and holder, and it is designed to be used for retaining the napkin when the latter is laid on the table and for securing it to the clothes in front when it is in use.
The device consists of a ring having two projecting arms provided with hooks at their ends for sustaining the napkin and pinning the same to the clothes.
In the accompanying drawing I show one form of my invention.
The ring as I here illustrate it is made up of wire of any-shaped section wound to form two rings a, a, joined together by a connecting-wire Z). Each end of the wire is prolonged from the opposite ends of the two rings and extend out, as the arms 0, atan angle with the axis of the ring, or they may extend at right angles to the said axis, according to the distance apart it is desired that the ends of the arm shall be. At the ends of the arms a are formed two hooks, as here shown, one hook (I being to secure the arms a to the clothing and the other e for hanging the napkin on. I provide a bar or name-plate), which is secured by each end to one of the parts of the ring. On this plate the name or initials may be engraved.
When the napkin is not in use, it is folded and inserted into the rings a; but when it is to be used the hooks dare fastened into the front of the clothing, suspending the ring below or at the breast, and the napkin is hung on the hooks e.
If desired, the hooks 6 may be dispensed with and the napkin pinned to the clothing by the hook d, passing through it and into the fabric of the clothing. In one case the ring will be inside and in the other outside of the napkin.
The ring proper may be solid, having the arm soldered or otherwise secured, as the particular construction of the ring does not constitute' my invention.
I claim-- A combined napkin ring and holder con sisting of a wire formed into a ring, the two ends of the wire extending as arms from opposite ends of the ring, each of saids arms being provided at its end with hooks for fastening the napkin in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AIIIIIEUS MILLARD SPAULDING.
IVitnesses:
A. W. FURBUT, JAMES B. STEVENS.
