Description

E. G. STILLMAN & E'. F..BURROWS.
Tag-Holders.
N0. 137,257. Pat entedMarch 25,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELISHA C. STILLMAN, OF HOPKINTON, RHODE ISLAND, AND EDMUND F. BURROWS, OF MYSTIC RIVER, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN TAG-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,257, dated March 25,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELISHA O. STILLMAN, of Hopkinton, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, and EDMUND F. BURROWS, of Mystic River, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements on TagHolders, of which the following is a specification:
The natureof our invention consists in providing a tag-holder composed essentially of a sheet-metal plate with a folded edge, under which the label or tag is inserted, and a bent spring, which, being hinged to the plate at one end, can be sprung under the folded edge so as to clamp the tag or label to the plate, and also presents a loop or bail for suspending it from a package.
Figure illustrates our improved tag-holder as it appears after the tag has been inserted and the spring sprung under the folded edge of the plate. Fig. 2 shows the spring drawn from under the folded edge of the plate and swung back to admit of the removal or insertion of a tag or label. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the holder as shown in Fig. 1.
The same letters of reference are used in all the figures in the designation of identical parts.
The plate A, in the example illustrated, is of semicircular form, the curved edge of which is folded, forming a lap, A a portion of which is cut out, as at a. Upon the straight edge a long ear, A is formed for the reception of one end of the curved spring B, the other end of which is bent into a semicircular form corresponding to the shape of the folded edge of the plate A. The extreme end of this part of the spring is pointed, as shown at b, enabling it to readily pass. through sacks or sacking with which packages may be covered. Be
tween the end pivoted to the plate and the curved port-ion which is adapted to enter under the lap A the spring has the form of a bail for suspending the holder, which may be done either by passing the spring through the outside covering of the package, or by tying it thereto by a cord passed through its bail. The pivoted end of the spring protrudes with its extreme end some distance from the ear, and is bent, so that when the spring is under the lap A this bent end, I), will stand in front of the label, and be an additional guard against its accidental withdrawal. sprung into and out of its seat under the lap A by manipulating it where it is exposed at,
a it may be bent up there or otherwise formed for affording a convenient hold to the fingers. The form of the plate A is entirely immaterial. Any desired form may be adopted, the spring being in each case suitably shaped to adapt it for use in connection with the special contour of plate selected. I
WVhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A tag -holder composed of a plate, A, having a lap, A and a spring'clamp, B, connected to the plate and adapted to be sprung under the lap A thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the plate A A a, and spring-clamp B b b, pivoted thereto, substan tially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELISHA C. STILLMAN.
EDMUND F. BURROWS.
