T. J. MALONBY. TOBACCO WRAPPER AND PACKAGE.
No. 477,015. Patented June 14, 1892. C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. MALONEY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
TOBACCO WRAPPER AND PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 477,015, dated June 14, 1892.
Application filed March 19, 1892. Serial No. 425,512. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS J. MALONEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey Oity, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco Vrappers and Packages, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved tobaceo-wrapper combining in a single construction the wrapper proper, of paper or other suitable material, and strips of foil for folding over the ends of the package.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of my improved tobacco-Wrapper in its preferred form. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same, and Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the Wrapped package. i
Referring to said drawings, A is the body 4of the Wrapper, made of any suitable material, preferably of heavy Manila paper; B, strips of foil at each side of the Wrapper loose from the wrapper, except at the inner edges, where they are secured to the Wrapper by the label O,Which overlaps lthe inner edge of each strip.
The parts are secured together, preferably, by gumming, although any other suitable means maybe used, and lthe strips B are preferably secured to the body of the wrapper A by gum ming them to the label C and the latterto the body of the Wrapper, as shown; but it is evident that the edges of the stripsoverlapped by the label may be pasted directly to the body, if desired.
Vhile the strips of foil have been shown as secured to the Wrapper by a label consisting of a single stri p overlapping the edges of both strips of foil, it is evident that tWo strips of paper may be used and that the foil Vmay be secured Without the use of strips by gnmming the edges to the body. I prefer the construction shown, however, as the complete Wrapper with label is thus applied at a single operation, the label being, as is preferable, a separate piece from the body of the Wrapper.
By my improved construction I am able to reduce the amount of foil, as in the construction of my patent, No. 452,109, May l2, 189i, and, moreover, avoid all danger of the tarnishing of the foil exposed on the package resulting from gumming the foil to the wrapper.
It will be understoodthat foil or silver paper may be used in place of sheets having both surfaces ot' foil, and such material is to be understood as covered by the term foil used in the claims.
What I claim isl. A tobacco-Wrapper consisting of a sheet of paper or other suitable material having at its opposite edges loose strips of foil secured to the Wrapper at their inner edges, substantially as described.
2. A tobacco-wrapper consisting of a sheet of paper or other suitable material having at its opposite edges loose strips of foil secured to the Wrapper at their inner edges, and a label secured to the body of the Wrapper and overlapping the edges of the foi1,-subs1an tially as described. Y
3. A tobacco -package having a covering consisting of a wrapperof paper or othersuitable material, loose strips of foil folded over the ends and overlapping the sides of the package and secured at their inner edges to the wrapper, and a label covering the sides o'f the package and overlapping the foil at each end, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS J. MALONEY.
