Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Jury 2a, 1913.
'lpplcation filed July 21, 191,1. Serial No. 639,847.
To all whom it may concern.'
- Be it known that I, RU'rHroRD C. Cof
srAN'rINn, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Cincinnati, in the `county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Merchandise-lvrappers, ofwhich the following l is a specification.A
My invention relates to merchandise wrappers, and has' for its object the provision of a new and improved wrapper intended par- -ticulai'ly to wrap laundered articles, such as shirtsand the like. t
yIt. embraces a stiff back sheet for lending support to the laundered article and a thin transparent front sheet through which the pattern on the laundered article can be seen, and securing means so' arranged that the article may be firmly inclosed irrespective of its bull The Ainvention will be readily understood from the following description and claim, and from the drawing, in which latter:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of .my improved devicegir partly open relation. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on aline corresponding to the line 242 of Fig. 3, 4showing the same in flat relation, with the flap turned under. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same, showing a shirt` wrapped thereby, and showin-g the closure thereof in one of its closing positions in full lines and in another of its closing positions in dotted lines, and, Fig. e is a cross-section of my improved device taken on the line 9 2 of Fig. 3, showing the same i'n closed posit-ion for a comparatively bulky article in full lines and in closed position for a less bulky article in dotted lines. l
11 represents aback sheet of such rigidity or stiffness as to forma support for the article being wrapped. I shall hereinafter refer to this sheet astl e stiff back sheet.- It may be of straw-boar or other material suitable for the purpose. It aids in lending rigidity to the package. It is preferably ofgreater length than width and. is desirably of a shape to correspond to `the shape ofthe folded laundered article.
loereceivedl across the face of the article being wrapped and forms a ing sheet .for the article., This thin transparent sheet is of a greaterfwidth than the 5! back sheet, one edge 13, of the-thin-.trans- 12 is a thin transparent sheet arranged to` covering protect` parent sheet'being secured lengthwise of one of the lengthwise edges la oi' the back sheer,
the edge 13 being' pasted as shown at 1.3 to the rear-'face of the edge la, the thin transparentsheet passing thence toward the front face of the back sheet and across thesame, and thence again to the rear of the back sheet for forming a flap 15, preferably with a score 17, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, coincident with the other edge 18. of the back sheet when the wrapper has no article there.- in so that the saine maybe conveniently stacked, handled and shipped.
rl-he outer corners of the Hap recede as shown at 19 'and a plurality of securing strips shown at 20, are secured lo the free` end of the thin transparent sheet adjacent to the inner ends of the receding portions of said corners. @ne 'of the sides of each of these strips is provided with a. coating 2l of paste by which `one of the ends of each of the strips is pasted to thelateral end of the thin transparent she-et, the other end of each of said strips projecting laterally from' the thin transparent sheet, the inner faces of these laterally projecting portions of these strips being provided with said coating of paste in dry state.v
The thin transparent sheet is passed across the article being wrapped vand the flap passed to the rear face of the back sheet, where it is pulled at the strips for drawing the thintransparent sheet firmly' across the article being wrapped', the paste-.coated projecting ends ofthe strips being wet and pressed against the lrear face ofthe backsheet at any lateralv portion of the latter necessary to make a firmly wrapped package. If a bulky article is being'wrapped,
'the flap .and strip will not extend as far across the rear face of the backl sheet as when a less bulky Varticle is beingwrapped, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4f. 1
The strains upon the outer or. normally A free end of the thin transparent sheet are` in diagonal linesl between the respective spaced-apart attaching strips and the. re-
ioo
spective upper and lower edges of the 'thin transparent sheet outside of, lbut adjacent to the score 17, the exact point lof intersection i of said lines of stress with said upper and lower edges depending upon the bulk ,'of the article being wrapped. In order to avoid the presence of loose portions. of `said, .'ap; at4 saidzdorgersglf.remove s'a1dloose portions and form receding corners.; 19 befwtween said vupper/ and lower edges of said= thin transparent sheet and the spaced-apart;
flap portions thereon.A
In this m -er 5 provide a firm package, the edgesfin'hich are maintained tautthroughout andA avoid the danger of having said edges/torn or y damaged by the rubbing of one wrapped package upon another.
Having thus fully described my invention,
l lstitf back sheet having parallel lateral edges and a relatively thin front sheet of the same length as the back but of a widthf' greater than the said back sheet, the said front sheet having parallel lateral edges and 29 having one of its lateral edge portions per- ;manently secured tothe rear face of the back.'
sheet at one lateral edge thereof, the front sheet at its side opposite its said attached side having its corners eut diagonally, and
tabs permanently attached to the outer face of the front sheet at t-he last mentioned side thereof and projecting beyond the corresponding lateral edge, the tabs being located one near the top of the front sheet and the.
other near the bottom thereof and spaced apart nearly the entire length o f the sheet' and substantially at the points of intersection last mentioned lateral edge thereof, vthe front sheet being adapted tofbe stretched over a laundered article disposed. against the front ,face of the back sheet and over the `lateral edge of the back sheet opposite that of the diagonal corners ofthe sheet'with the edge at which the. front sheet is permanently secured, he surplus width of the front 'sheet being arranged to.lie against the rear facel of the back4 sheet, and the tabs being provided each with adhesive whereby the-tabs,"
may be secured to the rear face ofthe back? points conslderably' sheet at indeterminate spaced above and below the transverse median line of the said back sheet. y
In testimony whereof, I have' signed my L name hereto in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. v
