UNITED STATESl PAPER NAPKIN A Per Samuel Ewerlf, Stockholm, Sweden and in Sweden October 22,1930
Application March 31, 1931, Serial No. 526,634,
2 claims. (01.'206-46) The present invention relates to improvements in paper napkins, the principal object of the invention being to provide a napkin of this character having an integral envelope or cover in which it can be completely enclosed and sealed and protected against contamination until it is to be used,
the cover being readily detachable.
Paper napkins are usually delivered from the mill in open or unfolded condition and remain in such condition during transportation and storage, the folding being given at the place of use. Consequently, there is considerable risk of the napkins becoming soiled and picking up bacteria. The present invention is designed to overcome this disadvantage by providing a napkin which will be folded and enclosed within a sealed coverV or envelope at the place of manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the descriptionproceeds.
In the drawing accompanying this specification,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a napkin and its envelope-forming extension, showing the same in open position and marked off for folding in accordance with the present invention; f
Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating the napkin partly folded; and y Fig. 3 is a plan view of the container enclosing the completely folded napkin.
As shown in the drawing, the napkin comprises a rectangular sheet 1 provided with an appendant portion or extension 2 adapted to form the cover of the napkin 1. The area of the portion 2 is equal to a quarter of the area of the sheet 1 and may be detached therefrom along the perforation 3. The sheet 1 is first folded along its two centre lines 4 and 5 and then along the diagonal 6. The napkin thus attains the shape shown in Fig. 2. The portion 2 is now folded along the perforation 3, so as to occupy the position indicated by dotted lines, the portion 2 being then folded along the diagonal '7. The napkin 1 is thus completely enclosed by the portion 2 which is closed up to form a protecting cover by pasting together the gummed edges 8. The final shape of the napkin is illustrated in Fig. 3. When the napkin is to be used the cover 2 is, of course, torn off along the perforation 3.
It will of course be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise manner of folding the napkin herein described, since any fold which will enable the napkin to be completely enclosed by the cover 2 is within the purview of the claims appended hereto.
Having now particularly described the nature the opposite side of the folded extension so as to of my invention and the manner of its operation, what I claim is: l n
1. .As a new article of manufacture, a paper napkin which in a folded condition is enclosed in a removable protecting cover, 'comprising in 60 the unfolded condition a rectangular sheet forming the napkin, an integral rectangular extension having an area equal to a fraction of the area of v the sheet being provided at one end of said sheet and adapted to form the `protecting cover, one edge of said extension being continuous with one edge of the sheet, said extension being providedv along at leasttwo of its free edges with paste-carrying tabs, the sheet being in the finished article folded together and folded into said extension, said extension being folded over the folded sheet so as to entirely cover both sides of the folded sheet, and said tabs being folded over the corresponding edges of the folded sheet and pasted to entirely enclose the folded sheet within the folde extension.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a paper. napkin which in a folded condition is enclosed in a removable protecting cover, comprising in the unfolded condition a rectangular sheet forming the napkin, an integral rectangular extension having an area equal to one-fourth of the area of the sheet being provided at one end Vof said sheet adapted to form the protecting cover, one edge of said extension being continuous with one end of the sheet, saidextension being provided alongtwo adjacent edges with paste-carrying tabs, the sheet being in the finished article folded to tri"- angular shape and folded into said extension, said extension being also folded to triangular shape so as to entirely cover both sides of the folded sheet, and said tabs being folded over the corresponding edges of the folded sheet and pasted to the-opposite side of the folded extension so as to entirely' 95 enclose the folded sheet within the folded extension. i p
