NEWSPA'PER WRAPPER Filed Nov, s, 193s vthe newspaper is inserted; Fig. 3 is alongihidinal section taken on the 'Patented Apr. 1911, 1942 v i UNITED STATES PATENT OlfFICEr NEWSPAPER wmirrna samuel a. Hirschberg, chics, m. Application November 3, 1938,' Serial No. 238,551
comms. `(Cieza-'438) This linvention relates. toka newspaper wrapper or bag, and more particularly to a water proof bag, wrapper, sack, envelope or container for receivingand' protecting a newspaper, magazineor the like such as for home delivery, especially when delivered in inclement weather such the conditions above set forth, but which can be readily torn opento obtain access tothe paper and thrown away at a minimum of expense, thus insuring that the subscriber will atall times receive the newspaper in good, dry and readable condition. v
Another object of the invention is to provide a bag or wrapper of the kind and type specified which is made of a novel. extremely simple and inexpensive blank so that it can be produced in quantities at a very low cost and which is so formed as to permit it to be readily sealed or tied at one end over the. newspaper Vor the like after the latter is inserted in the bag or wrapper in la folded condition so asnot to add an appreciable cost-to the newspaper subscription or 'delivery thereof, in; fact, so as to facilitate tossing thereof in making deliveries, without folding in the'newspaper.l v
Other objects and advantages will appear and theb'ag or wrapper constituting my invention is made from a comparatively rectangular section of water pro'of or oiled paper or other suitable water proof fibrous material, tearable Cellophane or the' like, and preferabivof'sufliciently rippable but tough texture to prevent destruction thereoLin normal use. The blanks are suit'- ably stamped out from sheets and comprise a "body composed of an elongated rectangular central portion I'I which forms one side of the bag. 'I'he other side may be suitably formed and suitably connected tothe side II. along one or more edges. but is shown provided with opposite and relatively narrow elongated integral sections or flaps I2 and I3 joined therewlthalong the side' suitable way. By way of illustration, the marginal portion; constituting a narrow strip I 6 at the outer Vledge of theportion I3 may be Vcoated with adhesive as shown at II to cause the two portions to adheife. The bottom of the blank is provided V lthe usual bo'x formation which may be eliminated Aand which also embodies a tab whereby the bag \ma y be readily torn` open to permit removal of be more fully brought out hereinafter, reference in:` Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the wrap- Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe wrapper before bag opened out .being had to the accompanying drawing, wherewith a folding extension Il, although generally speaking, when the sides I2 and I 3 are folded on the side II,l the adjacent open end of the bag is merely folded on itself and may be secured by suitable adhesive I9 although other suitable form of connecting or fastening Vmeans may be employed. As illustrated, this adhesive is preferably disposed on the inner face of the portion I8 and both the inner and outer faces of the end portions 2Ilwhich, in the preferred embodiment,
are preferably tapered or beveled toward the outer edges ofthe portions I2 and I 3 at the end of the blank as above pointed out. This produces a flap' at the bottom of the bag which is folded along the line 2 I, the portions 2l being secured to the portion I8 and then the twb being folded over against the outsides of the portions I2-and ISforming the' other side of the bag or wrapper in addition to the side II.
It isof course-understood that the device may be. economicallyV produced in large quantities by suitable machinesvor. otherwise and when pro- 1198.1 a cammen eeuu shown: the bottom plying adhesive thereto.
end opened out to illurtratethe manner of ap: c'
duced, will be flat as shown in Fig. 3, although the thickness is accentuatedln this poses offillustration. i
The opposite or top end of view for Purthe bag or wrapper is provided with narrowed end portions or ex'4 tensions, one extension 2 2 being formed at the end of. the part I-I and tapering as shown. While the opposite sides are ahown'c'onc'aved at 2,3, it isV tobe understood'that I do not desire tobe limited to this formation. Opposing the tapered end or extension 22 is another tapered end or extension formed at the ends of the portions l2 and I3, as shown at 24 andv 25, respectively. These portions are of course secured together in overlapping relation along the marginal portions as previously explained land these two tapered sides or ends are more than half as long 'as the body so that they can be readily tied together as indicated at 26 in Fig. 1 of the drawing and drawn as tight as desired over the end of the newspaper or the like 21 inserted in the bag so as to thoroughly protect the latter froml becoming In order to obtain access to the newspaper4 within` the wrapper or bag' without untying the tapered end portions or tying extensions forming a closure at the open en d of the bag, the latter is designed to be readily torn down ,the side or along one edge so that the newspaper may be removed .and the bag discarded. For this purpose, the bag is formed along one edge and at the end provided with the tying extensions ltwisted or tied to form the knot 26 with a tab 28 extending between two of the opposed curved edges 23 of the tapered extensions of the body of the bag to which it is joined as at 29, the opposed edges diverging outwardly, if desired, as indicated at 30. However, the main aspect of this tab is to leave' sufficient material at the point 29. that is, in the width of the tab so `that when the tab is grasped and pulled, it will be certain to tear the bag down the side or one folded edge so that-the newspaper may 'be removed. This device will also facilitate delivery and will especially protect the newspaper from being soiled and soaked and rendered unusable or unreadable. It may also be used for mailing purposes and will give similar protection spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish i to be limited to the precise details of construction closed end and an opposite open end', and tapered tying extensions at the. openend of a length greater than half the length of thepocket.
2. A protecting wrapper for newspapers for l delivery purposes formed' of waterproof material and in the form of an elongated body formed into a pocket having aclosed end, tapered tying extensions at the opposite open end more than half the length lof the body, and an extension tab .widened toward its free end, formed between the end forming a closed bottom and tapered exten sions at the other end .of a length at least half the length of the body adaptedto be tied together in a knot. f Y
4. A wrapper of the class described formed of a blank having opposed sides folded flat. and joined along marginal edges and having a folded end forming a closed bottom, tapered ex- A tensions at the other end long enough to-be tied Y together in a knot, and a tearing tab extending set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: f
1. A protecting wrapper for newspapers for delivery purposes formed of water proof material and in the form of an elongated pocket having a f from the body betwee'n at least two edges of said tapered extensions for tearing open the bag along I 'livery purposes, comprising a blank formed of a waterproof imperforate sheet folded on itself to form a flat bag proper with relatively sharp edges and the folded portions overlapped at their edges and joined to form a `tubular closure, a closed bottom for the bag, tapered extensions extending entirely across the top edges of the bag and tapering to a narrow formation withconcave sides, said extensions being longer than half the length of the bag proper and adapted to be tied together and a tearing tab extending from the body and overlying at least one fold between a pair of extensions.
6. A wrapper for newspapers or the like for de livery purposes comprising a sheet of waterproof brous material and sufficiently rippable but tough texture to prevent destruction thereof in normal use, said sheet comprising a body having an elongated rectangular central portion and relatively narrow elongated integral aps along the long edges thereoffolded in overlapped relation against the. body and secured together, the bottom edge of the sheet having a narrow extension folded-against the flaps to close said end and t-he opposite ends of the central portion and ilaps having tapered extensions, the extensions of the aps being disposed in overlapped relation along their edges and secured together, said extensions adapted to be tied to close said end, and a tab projecting from one end of the sheet vbetween a pair of extensions in alignment with the folding
