JOHN SHOEMAKER, OF PUTNEYVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAM P-CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 472,405, dated April 5, 1892.
Application filed April 15, 1891. Serial No. 389,069. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN SHOEMAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Putneyville, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Lamp-Chimney Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in lamp attachments.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to be readily attached to the chimney of a lamp and capable of regulating the draft and of enabling the lamp to be moved and exposed to wind and serve the function of a lantern without danger and to exclude insects and the like.
The invention consists of the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a lamp-chimney. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the plate.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a lamp attachment or shield' comprising a plate 2, designed to be arranged at the top of the chimney 3, and a wire supporting-frame 4. The plate or disk 2 is constructed of sheet metal and is arranged a short distance above the top of a chimney and serves as a shield to limit the draft and prevent air rushing down the chimney and putting out the light.
The supporting-frame 4 is constructed of a single piece of wire and is composed of sides 5, having their upper ends secured to the plate 2, and a clamp 6, connecting the lower ends of the sides and adapted to embrace the burner 7and secure the device thereto. The sides 4 conform to the configuration of the chimney and are provided near their ends with coils 8 and 9, which change the direction of the wire, and the upper coils 9 engage the notches 10 of the chimney-top and prevent the plate slipping thereon. The upper ends 11 of the sides 5 are provided with hooks, the ends of which engage sockets 12 of the plate 2. The sockets 12 are formed by striking the metal of the plate downward from the lower face thereof, and the plate is provided at each side with several sockets to permit the adjustment of the sides of the frame to large and small chimneys. The sides are provided near their upper ends with springs 13, which permit the frame to be extended and adjusted to chimneys of different lengths and which hold the eyes 9 into engagement with the notches of the top of the chimney.
The clamp 6 consists of curved jaws 14 and a coiled spring 15, connecting the jaws and enabling them to clamp the lamp-burner 7 and to be opened to remove the frame from the lamp. The wire at the ends 16 of the jaws is doubled and returns on the same about half thelength of the jaws and is twisted around the same at diametricallycpposite points 17, and the clamp is connected with the sides by straight portions 18.
It will readily be seen that the lamp attachment is simple and inexpensive in construction and is adapted to be readily adj usted to suit the size of the chimney and is capable of regulating the draft and shielding the light and excluding insects.
What I claim is 1. A lamp-shield.comprising the plate and the wire frame supporting the plate and consisting of the sides and the clamp connecting the lower ends of the sides and having curved jaws and provided with a coiled spring connecting the jaws, substantially as described.
2. A lamp-shield comprising the plate provided with a series of sockets and the wire supporting-frame having its sides provided at their upper ends with hooks to engage the sockets, substantially as described.
3. A lamp-shield comprising the plate arranged at the top of the chimney and the wire frame supporting the. plate and composed of sides conforming to the configuration of the chimney and having their upper ends secured to the plate, coils 9, formed in the frame to engage the flutes in the top of the chimney, the springs 13, and the wire clamp at the bottom of the frame to engage a lamp-burner, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN SllOEMAKER.
