:SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no. 729,463, dated May 26, 1903. Application filed December 31, 1902. Serial No 137,318. (No model.)

Zen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and;

State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Lantern, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to oil-lanterns of the: tubular type; and its object is to provide a new and improved lantern which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture, and arranged to securely hold the chimney in place by Wires secured to the base and engaging the crimped top of the chimney.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

It is understood that by the operator pressing the sides of the bail above the ring H the ends G are swung apart out of engagement with the crimpedtop F of the chimney F, so that the latter can be readilylifted olf the base to permit filling the font B with oil and to manipulate theadjusting device D to bring the wick into the proper position. When the pressure is released on the sides of the bail H, then the latter closes, andthereby moves the upper ends G of the wires Gin'ward and back into'e-ngagement withthe crimped top F of the chimney F, and the latter is again placed in position on the lugs A of the base A. Now by having the wires G arranged in the manner described downward pressure is exerted by the ends G on the chimney-top to hold the latter securely in position on the lugs A and around the font B, forming a permanent fixture of thebase A. V

In lighting the wick'when the chimney F is removed, as above described, it is desirable that the flame shall extend about half the usual height, and then the chimney is replaced and locked in position, as above described. The flame now soon reaches its full height without danger of smoking and produces a powerful light. Itis understood that the flame rises to the desired extent as soon as the chimney is sufliciently heated to heat the incoming air passing to the burner.

The lantern described can be very cheaply manufactured and can be easily manipulated to produce a good flame at the burner.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv 1. A 1antern,comprisinga base, a chimney resting on the base, upwardly extending wires held on the base outside the chimney and bent toward each other at their upper ends and terminating in eyes, overreaching and engaging the top of the chimney, pressing the same downwardly upon the base of the lantern, and a bail for the lantern, said bail being pivotallysecured to said upwardlyextending wires, the eyes at the upper extremities of said wires also forming pivotpoints for the bail, as specified and for the purpose set forth.

2. A lantern comprising a base, a font permanently secured to the base, a chimney resting on the base and surrounding the font, and forming with the latter air-spaces for the passage of air to the burner, wires held on the base, outside of the chimney, and adapted to engage with their upper ends the top of the chimney, to hold the latter in position on the base, a manipulating-bail, pivotally connected with the upper ends of the wires, for opening and closing the same and for carrying the lantern about, said bail being formed of spring-wire and having its lower ends crossed, and a ring surrounding the two sections of the bail at their crossing-point, as set forth.

3. A lantern having a base provided on its top with spaced chimney-resting lugs, a raised annular portion outside the said lugs extending up into about the same plane with the lugs, a font permanently secured to the said base within the said lugs, for the chimney to inclose the font, and wires held on the base and adapted to engage the top of the chimney, to hold the latterin position on the said lugs, as set forth.
