LANTERN.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK LENNE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention to be hereinafter described relates to lanterns.

Broadly speaking, the invention comprises a font, a burner adapted to be detachably connected thereto, a chimney adaptedto be seated on the burner, a spring-actuated retaining device adapted to hold the chimney in position, and a ventilator hood adapted to be detachably connected to the top of the chimney.

In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.

Throughout the several figures of the drawings, like reference characters designate the same )arts.

In the flrawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lantern complete; Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the lantern; Fig. 3 is an end view of the removable ventilator hood; Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the chimney proper; Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the same; Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the lantern font with all other parts removed; and, Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the same.

In the preferred form of the invention, a font 1 of usual construction is provided. This font is formed with a wick well 2, which projects slightly above its upper face. Short air tubes 3 extend inward across the top of the font toward the well 2 and communicate with a perforated cylindrical support 41 adapted to receive the burner cap 5. IVhen properly positioned, there will be a space between the burner cap 5 and the top of the well 2. This space allows free circulation of air about the wick and burner.

Instead of the usual glass chimney for the lantern, a mica chimney 6 is provided. This mica chimney is preferably cylindrical in form and is braced longitudinally by metal strips 7. The circular form of the top is as- Specification of Letters Patent.

sured by a metal band 'or ring 8, while the bottom is both braced and supported by a flanged circular plate 9 having a central opening for the passage of the burner cap. In order to hold this chimney securely seated, a spring-operated yoke 10 is provided. The upper end of this yoke is adapted to be seated in notches cut in. the top edge of the chimney, and the ends of its arms are connected to the font by coil springs 11. In order to adequately cover the top of the chimney, a hood 12 is provided. This hood comprises a cylinder provided with a cap 13, so positioned as to allow passage of air horizontally across the top of the chimney. The lower or open end of this hood is just suffi ciently large to fit freely about the upper end of the chimney. Notches let are cut in the lower edge of the hood for the passage of the upper end of the yoke 10, and hooks 15 are pivotally mounted adjacent the notches so that they may catch over the yoke and hold the hood in place.

In order to securely connect the burner and the font, the cylindrical burner support 41 is provided with a bayonet slot 16 adapted to receive the stem of the wick raiser.

The lantern is assembled as follows: The burner is placed over the cylindrical sup port 1 in such position that the stem of the wick raiser will enter the open end of the bayonet slot 16; the burner is then turned to lock it in position, the chimney is now positioned so that the circular plate 9 rests upon the upper wall of the burner cap; the yoke 10 is now pulled upward against the tension of the springs 11 until it may be seated in the notches in the top of the chimney; and finally the hood 12 is placed over the end of the chimney so that the notches lt receive the yoke 10 and the catches 15 are turned to operative position.

In order to enable easy lighting of the lantern, the plate 9 has been provided with an opening 17, through which a lighted match may be passed. This opening is adapted to be closed by a small closure plate 18, which is pivoted to the plate 9.

A lantern of this character is not only cheap of manufacture, but may be very quickly put together and taken apart for cleaning, repairing, altering or shipment.

It is clear that changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and disposition of the several parts of the invention, without in any way departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such within this application, wherein only a preferred form has been disclosed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination in a lantern of the character described, a yoke adapted to hold the lantern chimney in position, a hood provided with slots adapted to receive said yoke, and catches connected to the hood and adapted to engage the yoke to connect the hood E lap the upper end of the chimney and pro- 'vided with notches in its lower end adapted to be al'ined with the notches in the edge of the chimney, and a yoke adapted tobe seated in both sets of notches and hold the chimney in position.

4. A lantern of the character described, comprising a font, a burner supported by the font, a chimney provided with notches in its upper edge, a hood adapted to overlap the upper end of the chimney and provided with notches in its lower end adapted to be ali-ned with the notches in the edge of the chimney, a yoke adapted to be seated in both sets of notches and hold the chimney in position, and means for connecting the hood to the yoke.
