Description

J. E'NGLE, Jr,
LAMP-BURNER.
No.178,615. Patented June13,1876.
momma.
JACOB ENGLE, JR., OF SHARON SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification-forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,615, dated June 13, 1876 application filed April 4,1876.
I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB ENGLE, Jr., of Sharon Springs, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Burner, of which the fol lowing is a specification The objects of this invention are to increase the illuminating power of the kerosene-lamps now used without chimneys; also, to lessen the liability of extinguishing the flame by sudden vertical movementof the lamp; and, also, to prevent the escape of oil at the openings for the ratchet.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing,-and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved lamp-burner, taken on lineww of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view, with a part section.
I propose to extend the wick-tube A and gas-tube B sufficiently above the base of the burner to enable the outside case 0 to be elongated downward from the flame to serve the function of a chimney, to regulate the air-current, so that when it comes up to the flame it will be steady and strong, increasing the combustion and the illuminating powers,- and making the flame more steady and secure against the sudden impulses to which the currents are subjected by quickly raising and lowering the lamp. The cone D will also be -elevated, together with its air-regulating branches E, and will be supported by being attached to the ease O by standards F, or other equivalent devices. This elevation of the burner also prevents the heating of the lamp and the oil in it, as when made in the com mon way.
In connection with this elevation of the burner, I only partly perforate the plate G, because the stronger draft enables the requisite quantity of air to be obtained with fewer holes, and this affords protection to the flame.
H represents the cap on the end of the spindle I, and J the case in the stem to prevent the escape of the oil. The case is packed in the end with cork or other suitable material, for preventing the oil from working out.
K is the non-conducting packing-ring, which I tit on the top of the lamp and under the collar ot' the tube L of the burner, to prevent the oil from leaking out and to arrest the heat.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of wick-tube A, gastube B, and outside case 0 with the cone 1), having branches E, and supported by standard F, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the wick-tube, of cap H and case J, the latter packed with cork, as and for the purpose specified.
JACOB ENGLE, JR.
