JAMES ARTHUR EVERETT, OF MCLOUTH, KANSAS.
PROTECTOR FOR GAS MANTLES AND LAMPS.
Specifcationof Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed J' uly 31, 1918. Serial No. 247,545.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES ARTHUR Ev- ERETT, a citizen of the United States, residing atMcLouth, in the county of Jefferson, State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Protectors for Gas Mantles and Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 1of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved protector or guard for gas mantles, lamps or the like, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a wire fabric cage guard having means for holding the guard in different positions on the hanger of the gas mantle or lamp, thereby preventing various insects from gathering or collecting too near the light consequently avoiding shattering` the gas mantle, which is eX- tremely frangible.
The invention further aims to provide a guard or protector comprising upper and lower wire fabric members, the lower one being hingedly mounted and a wire fabric cylinder connecting the upper and lower members, and a hanger for suspending the guard upon the gas tube or the like which leads to the light.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations'falling within thc scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved guard or protector showing the same applied for protecting the gas mantle.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a gas tube, on iwhich and in different adjusted positions, by means of a set screw 2, a sleeve 3 is fastened. Depending angularly downwardly from and secured at 4 to the sleeve is a plurality of hanger arms 5, and 6 denotes the guard or protector as a whole.
This guard. or protector comprises a cylindrical wire fabric cylinder 7. A metallic rim 8, which is U-shaped in cross section receives the upper marginal edge portion of the cylinder 7, which is secured in said annular U-shaped channel 9 of the rim, by soldering or by clenching the wall of the rim. A disk shaped wire fabric top l0 is soldered or otherwise secured at l1 to the rim, and through the center of this top as at 12 the gas pipe or tube or the like 1 eX- tends, as shown at 12. The hanger arms 5 are riveted or otherwise secured at 13 to the rim 8, 'so as'to suspend the guard or protector in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2. An annular rim 14 similar to the rim 8 is provided, and the lower marginal edge of the wire fabric cylinder 7 is received and soldered in the annular channel 15 (which is U-shaped in cross section) of the rim 14. A wire fabric bottom 16 of disk form is provided, and secured to the marginal edge of thc disk bottom by clenching or by soldering is an annular rim 17 U-shaped in cross scf-tion. This rim 17 is hingedly connected as at 18 to the rim 14,` and diametrically opposite the hinge is a spring clasp, to engage the pin 20, to hold the bottom closed. A suitable gas burner 21 is carried at the lower end of the tube 1, there being a gas mantle 22 carried by the burner to be protected by the guard, thereby preventing insects from gathering too close around and shattering the gas mantle.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with a wire fabric tubular cylinder in concentric surrounding relation with and inclosing a burner and its mantle, means comprising a sleeve and depending arms to suspend the cylinder on a tube to the burner, said cylinder being closed at both ends, and hingedly connected means carried by the lower end of the cylinder whereby the lower end may be opened.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specilication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES ARTHUR EVERETT.
