M. P. BRIGHAM, Deod.
E. 0. BRIGHAM, Administrator. CARRIAGE ATTAOHMENT FOR LAMPS.
Patented Nov. 10, 1896.
Nirnn STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MORRILL F. BRIGHAM, OF MARLBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS; EUGENE O. BRIGHAM ADMINISTRATOR OF SAID MORRILL F. BRIGIIAM, DECEASED.
CARRIAGE AT TACHMENT FOR LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION formingpartof Letters Patent-No.57l,317, datedNovember 10, 1896.-
Application filed March 27, 1895. Renewed July 16, 1896. Serial No; 599,448. (No model.)
To wZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRILL F. BRIGHAM, of Marlborough, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Carrying Attachments for Lamps, of which the following description, in connec tion with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the prod uction of a novel carrying attachment adapted for application to the ordinary hand lamp whereby the latter may be carried freely about in the nature of a lantern, my improved attachment being also preferably so constructed as to more or less cover the top of the lampchimney, much as the chimney of a lantern is covered, to protect the flame from air-drafts, thereby making it possible to carry the lamp freely out of doors.
The various features of my invention will be hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents in perspective a lamp fitted with a carrying attachment embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a detail Viewillustrating a modification of my invention.
In the particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and shown in the drawings, A is a hand-lamp of any suit able or desirable construction, it being provided with a usual burner, shown as comprising a dome-plate a, a dome a, a usual chimney I) being positioned upon the plate a and held frictionally by usual holding-springs b.
In the embodiment of my invention here shown 0 is one form of top piece, shown as a sheet-metal disk or plate, from which depend a plurality of holding or carrying arms 0, preferably resilient, said arms, as shown, consisting of wires bent into U form and having their ends curved or bent over, as at 0 to secure said arms to the top. The arms 0 are suitably adapted at or near their lower ends to en gage the lam p-burner thereon. arms in the present embodiment of myinvention are hooked at c and adapted to spring under the edge of the dome-plate a of the lamp burner, said hooks being preferably turned up, as shown, to enter the usual con- The said cavity at the under side of and adjacent the peripheryof the said dome-plate, whereby the said hooked ends are prevented from easily disengaging from the said plate, the under sides of said hooks presenting beveled faces, as shown, to enable the attachment to be pushed down upon and automatically snapped into engagement with the burner dome-plate. A suitable handle it is attached to the top 0.
To cover the top of the lamp-chimney to keep out drafts of air, I have herein shown a protector d, preferably a sheet-metal disk or plate, the same, as shown, being provided with a plurality of depending spring supports or pressers d, which rest upon the flaring top of the chimney and retain the said protector at the proper distance from the chimney-top.
A spring 8, interposed between the protector and top piece 0, is shown as encircling a central pin or stud e on the protector, acting to press the protector downwardly into position with its pressers firmly seated upon the top of the chimney. The spring 5, by pressing the protector or pressers upon the top of the chimney, permits the attachment to be ap plied to lamps having chimneys of varying heights, i. 6., in a shorter chimney the pro tector would be depressed relatively to the top farther than shown in the drawings, and, vice versa, in a taller chimney the spring would be compressed, permitting the protector more nearly to approach the top, thereby adapting the attachment for chimneys of varying heights; and in any case the spring 8, together with the pressers, acts to hold the attachment firmly in position upon the chimney, with its hooked arms engaging some part near the lamp-top.
The attachment shown is readily placed upon and removed from the lamp, so that it is possible to readily convert an ordinary hand-lamp into an effective and useful lantern, and vice versa.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the pressers cZ as applied directly to the top piece.
My invention is not limited to the exact construction herein shown and described.
I claim- 1. The herein-described lamp-carrying-attachment, consisting of a suitable top piece,
fitted with a handle and a plurality of springactuated holding-arms depending from the said top and provided with lower beveledfaced holding ends adapted to snap beneath a lamp-burner dome-plate, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described lamp-carrying attachment, comprising a top piece in the form of a rigid disk, a disk-like protector parallel to and below the top piece, a spring tending to separate the two, and a plurality of later: ally spring-actuated holding-arms fixedly secured about the periphery of said top piece and movably secured about the periphery of said protector, said arms having hooked lower ends to engage beneath the dome-plate of the lamp-burner, substantially as described.
3. The herein-described lamp-carryingat- 'rachinent, comprising two parallel disks, one
below the other, a spring between them, a plurality of resilient pressers depending from the lower disk to engage within the top of the chimney, and a plurality of holding-arms, passing freely through peripheral perforations provided therefor in said lower disk and fixed at their upper ends adjacent the periphery of the upper disk, said arms having hooks at their lower ends to engage beneath the dome-plate of the lamp-burner, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
.MORRILL F. BRIGHAM.
