SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,264, dated April 5, 1892.

Be it known that I, HERMAN M. HOEL- SCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portfolios, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the construction of a portfolio adapted for the filing away of price-lists, circulars, periodicals, and other papers, and is intended to permit the putting in of new papers from time to time and also the removal of them in part or in whole whenever desired.

The invention is also adapted to permit the examination of the contents with as much facility as though the same were permanently bound in book form; and the invention consists in the novel construction of the several parts, as hereinafter fully set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows my portfolio in perspective and as it appears in use. Fig. 2 is a partial vertical cross-section.

In said drawings, A A may represent the covers of the portfolio, each flexibly hinged to one of the clamping-boards co, between which the papers to be filed are placed and held.

13 represents the periodicals or other matter secured in the file by the pressure put upon the clamping-boards. For the purpose of creating this pressure I employ, in combination with the clamping-boards, the following devices: Two or more hollow studs C, having heads 0 at one end and threaded interiorly, are passed upwardly through the under clamping-board a and serve as means of holding the papers in the portfolio, the papers be-' ing threaded upon them, as clearly shown. The exterior of these studs is smooth, so that no difficulty is experienced in putting the papers over them, and the edges of the paper are not caught by any exterior screw-thread.

D is a button having an interior recess d, adapted to allow the button to be passed down over the stud, and also provided with an axial screw E, adapted to enter and engage with the threaded interior of the stud. This screw extends below the bottom of the button a distance equal to the thickness of the upper clamping-board, so that the portfolio is well adapted to hold a file of papers as high as that portion of the studs projecting above the lower board. The upper clamping-board is adapted to set down over the studs, and the button bears upon it, as shown at Fig. 2, and, it will be noticed, effectually covers the stud from sight, no matter whether the number of papers filed in the portfolio is great or small, its action in this regard being the same at all times. It is also adapted to create such pressure by the clampingboards upon the contents, regardless of the thickness of the latter, as will hold them tightly at all times. The button, being the principal part of the fastening which remains in view, may be ornamented in any desired way, while the stem of the stud, being always covered, needs no ornamentation. Room is afforded in the stud for the entrance of the screw and in the button for the entranceof the stud to the full extent required in bringing the clamping-boards close together-as, for instance, when they have only afew sheets between them.

The combination, with upper and lower covers and their clamping-boards,of a screwfastening for the latter, consisting of the hollow stud, threaded interiorly and secured in the lower board, and a hollow button having an axial screw adapted to enter and engage the stud and also having room outside the screw for the entrance therein of the stud, the upper board setting down over the stud, and the button bearing down upon its upper surface, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, in a portfolio, with clamping-boards, of screw-fastenings consisting of the hollow stud threaded interiorly and secured in one of the boards, and a recessed button adapted to set over the stud and provided with an axial screw extending below the bottom of the button and entering the hol low of the stud and bearing upon the other board, substantially as specified.
