EDIVARD O. BAOHERT, OF CANTON, OHIO.
COMBINED MATCH-BOX AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,022, dated April 5, 1892.
Application filed February 4, 1891- Serial No. 380,115. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. BACHERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Match-B0x and Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a partof this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view.- Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing a slight modification and the top or upper part broken away. Fig. 3 is a back View of the match-box holder. Fig. 4 is a view of one side of the holder, showing a slight modification. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank, showing the same cut or formed to be folded to form the match-box. Fig. 6 is back View showing a piece of pasteboard or other material placed in the back of the match-box for the purpose of closing the back of the holder proper. Fig. 7 is a view showing one of the retaining-grooves and a stop. Fig. 8 is a view of a portion of the retaining-groove, showing the holding cap or lip. Fig. 9 is a transverse section through line x m, Fig. 3. Fig. 10 is a transverse section of one of the retaining-grooves, showing the location of one of the stops. Fig. 11 is a transverse section through line X X of Fig. 1.
The present invention has relation to a combined match-box and holder; and it consists in the diiferent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the blank from which the match-box is formed, said blank being preferably of metal. The parts of the blank A extending beyond the lines a, a and b b are bent substantially at right angles to the balance of said blank A, the bends being made on the lines a a and b b. The bends of the blank A on lines a a and b b form the front sides B and the backs O. The blank A is again bent on the lines o c and d d, which bends form thevertical sides uniting the top of the match-box holder the extensions Gare provided, which extensions are united by means of the folds'H, substantially as illustrated in Fig. ll, or, if desired, said extensions G may be formed long enough to lap one over the other and be securely attached together by solder or rivets.
It will be understood that the extensions G may be attached together in any convenient and well-known manner without departing from the nature of my invention.
The grooves E are for the purpose of holding the sand-paper I, which is preferably located in the position illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. For the purpose of preventing the sandpaper I from descending to the bottom of the match-box the stops J are provided, which stops are located so as to hold the bottom of the sand-paper I. The stops J are formed by cutting the raw edge of the metal forming the grooves E, again cutting at right angles to the first cut, thereby forming the lips or stops J.
When it is desired to close the back of the match-box holder, the card K or its equivalent is placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 6, which card extends the entire length of the match-box holder. It will be understood that when cardssuch as Kare used, the stops J are to be dispensedwith, which may be done by bending or leaving said stops in line with the metal-forming grooves E.
It will be understood that any kind of material may be used to form the cards K, and, if desired, the portion of the card extending above the sides D may have printed upon them any desired kind of advertising. If desired, the sand-paper I may be dispensed with and a card substituted therefor.
For the purpose of securely holding the sand-paper I or its equivalent in proper position and to prevent the same from becoming accidentally displaced the lips K are provided, which lips are originally formed upon the portion F of the blank A, as illustrated in Fig. 5. After the card or sand-paper has been properly adjusted the lips K are bent down over the top or upper ends of the grooves E, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
In Fig. i a slight modification is shown, which consists in only extending the grooves E to a point near the top or upper ends of the sides 1). For the purpose of making the match-box holder more rigid the flanges or tion illustrated in Fig. 6 and the matches placed between the sides B and the card or back K.
For the purpose of removing the matches from the tray 9 or the box proper the opening A is provided by so forming the sides B that their edges will not meet. For the purpose of providing a means for holding the sides 13 and the backs O the flanges a. are formed and are bent or folded against the sides and backs, substantially as illustrated in the drawings.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a match-box holder formed from the blank A, the combination of the front sides B, separated by an oblong opening A, the sides D, provided with the vertical grooves E, the backs O, the flanges a, and the tray g, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the front sides B, the vertically-grooved sides D, the backs O, and the flanges a, formed from a single blank, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the front sides B, separated by an oblong opening A ,the sides D, having grooves E, provided with lips K, the backs C, and the flanges a, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the front sides B, the backs G, and the sides D, having vertical grooves E, provided with stops J, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above Ihave hereunto subscribed my name in the pres ence of two Witnesses.
- EDWVARD C. BACHERT.
