Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WATSON E. GIBBONS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE MORGAN ENVELOPE COMPANY, OF MASSACHUSETTS.
TOILET-PAPER HOLDER.
SPECIFICA'JJION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,345, dated July 23, 1889.
Application tiled January 23, 1889. Serial No. 297,311. (No model.) Y
To all whom it may concern.' v
Be it known that I, WATsoN E. GIBBoNs, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of ll/Iassachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Toilet-Paper Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the iigures and letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved holder for holding together and suspending a package of toilet-paper so as to enable the sheets to be detached therefrom one at a time in anv expeditious manner and without disturbing the remaining sheets, which holdershall add but little to the weight orbulk of the package and not interfere with the close packing of a number of packages for shipment.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective View of a package of toilet-paper held andsuspended by my improved holder. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same, showing in dotted lines the suspension-bail turned down at against the back of the package for packing and shipment. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line xx, Fig. 3, showing the peculiar construction of the connection between the bail and main. portion of the holder.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
The letter A represents a package of sheets of toilet-paper. B is a backing of the same, consisting, preferably, of a stout piece of thick paper, card-board, or the like.
C is a metal strip extending across the rear of the backing at the top and vhaving arms or prongs C C, which extend forward through bothbacking and package of paper, their ends being turned down against the face of the package, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to prevent any sheets from slipping off.
To the metal strip C, near the upper edge, a metal bail D is hinged, as shown in Fig. 3. This bail serves as a means for hanging the package on a nail or other support; butit can b`e turned down flat against the face of the backing, so that in packing and shipment it the strip C. In order that said bail may lie perfectly iiat the portions e e of the strip C to which its eyes b i) are hinged are struck up slightly, as shown in Fig. 4. To remove a sheet of paper from the holder thus constructed, it is only necessary that the iingers be pressed against the outermost sheet and drawn lightly downward, whereupon said sheet will be drawn against the sharp upper edges of the arms or prongs C C and be severed thereby to the upper. edge, as will be readily understood. As the sheets continue to be removed, the package of coursebecomes thinner, and to prevent it becoming also loose the ends of the arms or prongs C C are further turned down.
The stift backing B serves not only to support the metal holder C and maintain thehorizontal position of its prongs, but also to prevent the rear sheets from becoming loosened and detached, to protect the wall from being soiled in the removal of the last sheets, and generally to strengthen and stiften the package and enable it to-be handled Without in- Jury.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new isl. The combination, with the package A of toilet-paper, of the stiff backing vB,'the metal strip C, havingthe projecting prongs or arms C C and the hinged bail D, allarranged substantially as described.
2. The package A of toilet-paper, the stift' backing B, the metal strip C, having the projecting prongs C C extending forward thro ugh both backing an d package A, and having the parts e c, to which the bail is'hinged, struck up above the face of said strip, in combination with the hinged bail D, having eyes b b, adapted, when turned down, to lie i'lat against the backing, substantially as described.
IVATSON E. GIBBONS.
