- Be it known that I, HENRY GEORGE, of Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Files or Binders; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in devices for filing or temporarily binding together letters, bills, (to.

The object of the invention is to produce a temporary binder which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effect-iv in operation.

The invention consists in the peculiar features of construction and novel combination of parts, which will hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 represents an end view of the improved binding device and indicates the operation of the same. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the binder to show the spring-catches.

In the drawings, 5 indicates a bed-plate, which may or may not be secured to a thin board of a size equal to that of the sheets of letter-paper or of the bill-heads for which it is to be used. At the rear portion of this bed-plate and extending across the greater portion of the same is the bearing 6, which may be stamped up from the metal of the bedplate or may be formed of a separate piece and secured to the bed-plate. The tilting arms 7 7 are formed in part with and connected at their bases by a straight shaft extending through the bearing 6 at the upper portions. These arms have the curved portions 8 8 and the pointed ends 9 9.

The spring-clips 1O 10 are secured by the plates 11 11 to the base 5 and extend upward and rearward, partially surrounding the rear portion of the tilting arms, the rear ends of these clips forming jaws 12, adapted to facilitate the entrance of the tilting arms between the shoulders of the clips. These clips may be secured in place to engage one of the tilting arms, or the pair of clips may be separated by the width of the plate between the tilting arms, and each of the pair engage a separate arm.

The vertical posts 13 13 are secured to the front portion of the plate or base 5 and may be hollow, or they may be provided at their upper ends with sockets adapted to receive the pointed ends of the tilting arms. The upper ends of these posts 13 13 are also out off at an angle to permit of their ready entrance into the holes punched in the letter or bill heads, and a short distance below the upper ends these posts 13 13 are provided with transverse perforations 14 14, through which a tape or string may be passed when it is desired to secure the contents of the binder together.

When in the closed position shown in solid lines in the drawings, the contents or any portion of the same can be readily moved from the posts 13 13 onto the tilting arms. When the desired letter or bill is thus brought to view, a simple movement of the hand will throw the tilting arms backward, and the paper may then be removed from the file or binder, which is then closed by a slight forward pressure on the tilting arms, the springclips engaging with these arms and supporting them in place. 7

When the entire contents are to be removed from the binder, a string or tape is usually passed through the perforations 1 1 14 of both the posts 13 13, and after pushing back the tilting arms the contents are removed from the posts 13 13, the movement of the contents tending to thread the string or tape held in the perforations 14 14 through the holes in the papers, which may now be secured together by tying the ends of the string or tape; or the operation maybe reversed by first moving the contents of the binder upon the tiltin g arms and then inserting the string or tape through the perforations 14: 14. The contents may now be pushed back onto the posts 13 13, threading the string or tape through the perforations in the papers and tying the ends.
