PATENT QFFICE.
BILL-FILE.
SPEGIFICATIOK forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,65 5, dated September 22, 1903.
Application filed March 13,1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,WILLIAM H. DETWILER, a citizen of the United States, residing at N0rristown,in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bill-files, and has for its object to construct a device of this character having a pair of impaling-pins provided with a novel means for detachably securing them to a base in order that papers may be transferred from one pin to the other.
The simple and novel construction eunployed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of my device. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a base-block having an aperture 2, formed therein which is covered by a base-plate 3, mounted on the base 1 and rigidly securedthereto. Two oppositely-curved impaling-pins i are connected by a cross-bar 5, thereby forming a lyre-shaped member and having their extremities 6 pointed to adapt them to pierce papers. Bends are formed in the pins 4 to form shoulders 7. An elongated slot 8 is formed in the base-plate 3 to accommodate the cross-bar 5, which fits therein, with the shoulders 7 engaging the ends thereof. To
- secure the impaling-pins to the base, a bolt9 is slidingly mounted in guides 10, formed on the under side of the base-plate 3,'which bolt has a head 11 beveled on its upper side and normally extending into and transversely the slot 8. A spring 12 bears on the rear of the bolt 9, and a notch 13 is formed in the upper side of the bolt 9 and has a face 13 inclined to the direction of the guides 10. A push button'le is mounted in a recess 15 in the base-plate 3 and carries a stem 15?, bearing a head 16, having a face 17 oblique to the direction of the stem to adapt it to engage the inclined face 13. Suppose the parts in the initial positions shown in the drawings. Then Serial No. 147,627. (No manic if it should be desired to detach the impaling-pins from the base 1-say for the purpose of shifting some of the bills or papers from one pin to the other, as at the close of a fiscal year, the end of a mouth, or a days business, '&c.-the thumb is applied to the push-button 14 to force it down to actuate the bolt 9, and thereby release the cross-bar 5 and enable it to be removed from the slot 8, after which the papers may be transferred. To once more secure the pins 4 in their upright positions, they are grasped and the cross-bar 5 inserted in the slot 8 and forced down on the inclined head 11, thereby displacing the bolt and engaging the bar 5 thereon. should be noted that the constructionfof the pins prevents the opposed ends of the members of two sets of bills on the two pins from overlapping and interfering with the removal of one another.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified inmany particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described myinvention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. In a bill-file, the combination of two impaling-pins connected by a cross-bar to enable papers to be shifted from one pin to the other via the cross -bar, a base, a springactuated bolt mounted in said base and located to engage said cross-bar, and means for operating said bolt to release said cross-bar, substantially as described.
2. In a bill-file, the combination of a bar having its ends bent up to form two impalingpins having sharpened vertical ends, a base having a slot thereinwithin which said bar is seated, a'sliding bolt engaging said bar, and means for operating said bolt to release said bar' to enable papers to be transferred from one of said impaling-pins to the other via said bar, substantially as described.
3. In a hill-file, two impalingpins connected by across-bar to enable papers to be transformed from one pin to the other with"- out taking them off the pins, said pins being bent to form shoulders, a base having a slot therein to accommodate said cross-bar with said shoulders engaging the ends of the slot, a sliding bolt having a beveled head extending transversely said slot and engaging said of said slidingbolt, andapnsh-button bearing cross-bar, and a push-button mounted in said base and located to be brought into engagement with said bolt to actuate it to release said cross-bar, substantially as described.
4. In a bill-file, the combination of a base having a slot therein, two impaling-pins connected by a cross-bar seated in said slot, a slidingly-mounted bolt having a beveled head extending transversely said slot and engaging said cross-bar, said bolt having a face thereon inclined to the direction of movement a head engaging said base to enable it to be operated to actuate said bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of twosubscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. DETWILER.
