PATENT OFFICE.

MASSACHUSETTS.
TICKET-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,652, dated July 18, 1893.
Application filed March 6, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK H. HASKELL, of Revere, and WILLIE E. I-IAsKELL, of Chelsea, both in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented jointly certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket- Holders forRailway-Passengers Use, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
Our invention relates to ticket holders for railway passengers use and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the accompanying drawings and to the claims hereinafter contained and in which our invention is clearly pointed out.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of a ticket holder embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the back side of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on line a: w on Fig.1. Fig.4. is an inside elevation of the front clamping jaw and the locking wedge and its operating spring. Fig. 5 is an inside elevation of the back or base plate, and Fig. 6 is a transverse-section on' line y, y, on Fig. 1.
The object of our invention is the production of a ticket holder adapted to be secured to the passengers clothing and to hold the passage ticket in firm grip in a convenient position to be seen and punched by the condnctor, said ticket being so folded as to expose only the coupon that is next to be required by the conductor.
To this end we construct our ticket holder as shown in the accompanying drawings in which A is the base or back plate having secured to its back side the pin a and hook at, and provided with the elongated ears I) b the ear I) having its lower end inclined as shown in Fig. 3.'
B is the front clamping plate provided with the ears 0, c, which are pivoted to the ears 12,1) by the pivot screws or pins cl d as shown.
The plate A has riveted to its inner surface near its upper end the spring 0 which is provided at said riveted end with a plurality of sharp hooking spurs e e, and bears at its opposite end upon the inner face of the front plate 13, as shown in Fig. 3.
The inner faceof that portion of the clamp- Serial No. 464,685- (No model.)
i-ng plate B which is opposite the spurs e e is roughened or provided with teeth as shown atf in Fig. 4 to aid in holding the ticket in place between the jaws of the holder.
The front jaw plate B has movably secured to its inner face the wedge like looking bolt h by means of the round headed screw 6 the shank of which passes through the slot 11 ,cut through said plate, and screws into said bolt h, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 6. The wedge like bolt h is pressed toward the clamping end of the holder and into engagement with the inclined edge of the ear I) of the plate A by the spring j, so as to lock the jaws upon the ticket inserted between them and prevent its loss by accidental opening of said jaws.
The operation of our invention is as follows: The holder being constructed as shown is pinned upon the passengers coat or vest in a convenient and upright position, and the ticket which he has purchased for the trip is placed in position between the clamping ends of the plates A and B as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. In order to insert said ticket between said jaws or remove it therefrom the party grasps the lower ends of the plates A and B between the thumb and fingers with the thumb-covering the head of the screw c' and as he presses upon the front plate with his thumb he moves said screw z'and the wedge h downward to a sufficient extent to permit the opening of the clamping ends of said .plates. If the ticket is along trip ticket having aseries of coupons it is folded and inserted in the holder so as to present the coupon next'to be called for by the conductor exposed so that it can be read and punched without removing it from the holder.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a ticket holder the combination of two clamping plates pivoted together at or near the middle of their length; and a plateor leaf spring riveted at one end'to one end of one of said clamping plates and bearing at its other end against the opposite arm of the other plate and provided with a series of' spurs at its riveted end and integral therewith. 2. In a ticket holder the combination of two clamping plates pivoted together at or near the middle of their lengths; a plate or leaf spring riveted at one end to one end of one of said plates and bearing atits opposite end against the opposite arm of the other clamping plate; and a locking device for locking said clamping plates in closed position.
3. In a ticket holder the combination of the j plates A and B provided respectively with :the ears b b and c, c, and pivoted together at or near the middle of their lengths; the spring 0; the wedge h; the spring j; and the screw
