NEWSPAPER-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,2 1.53, dated May 27, 1884.
Application filed November 15. 1883. (No model.)
baton which terminates in a handle for con-' venience of the reader.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a perspective view of a file embodying my invention, the said file being presented in its open condition. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same in its closed condition. Fig. 8 is a side elevation showing the file in use. Fig. 4 is a full-size transverse section of the staff, with paper inserted and clamped. Fig. 5 is a full-size longitudinal section of that end of the stafi' in which the looped extremity of the clamping-rod is pivoted. Figs. 6 and 7 respectively represent the locking-sleeve in two diiferent positions.
A represents a staff or baton, preferably of walnut or other hard wood, and of the represented cylindrical form, with athickened end, B, to serve as a handle. A flaring longitudinal groove, a, in said staff, that extends nearly or quite the length of the part beyond the handle B, receives my latch or clamp C, preferably a round rod, of steel or of spring-brass, having one end of it formed into a loop or eye, a, to receive a pin, D,which secures both said rod and a ferrule, E, to the staff. The rod C curves away from the staff in the manner shown, so that, when forced home, it presses by its middle portion tightly upon the inclosed paper. In its free condition the rod C is ca- 40 pa-ble of being deflected about thirty degrees from the staff s side, as shown in Fig. 1. The paper or publication having been inserted, the rod is pressed down into the groove, and its free end is thrust through the slot f in the 5 sleeve F. The sleeve, being then partially rotated, operates to retain the rod in the clamping position, and with its convex side tightly grasping the paper. The sleeve is secured in the locked condition by engagement of its slot f with the stud G, as shown in Fig. 7.
I claim as new and of my invention In a-newspaper-file, the combination, with spring-clamp Co and grooved staif Ad, of the slotted locking-sleeve Ff and the stud G, substantially as set forth.
In testimonyof which invention I hereunto set my hand.
GEO. V. NAUERTH.
