Description

(No Model.) J. JENKINS.
PENCIL SHARPENER.
110,335,819J Patented Feb. 9, 1886.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR B Z I I ATTORNEY N. PETERS. Phmuuw m mr, Wash] c.
NITED S ATES 'PENCIL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,819, dated February 9, 1886.
Application filed May 6, 1884. Serial No. 130,508. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOEL JENKINS, of Montclair, county of Essex, and State of New J ersey, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Penci1-Sharpeners; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompany ing sheet of drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in combined peucil-sharpeners and pencils; and the invention consists in a pencil-sharpener and sheath for the same, and a pencil, all constructed, arranged, and combined in the manner hereinafter particularly shown, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the sharpener covered by the ferrule. Fig. 2 is a crosssection taken in the line 00 :r, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side View, with the ferrule covering the sharpener in section. Fig. 4 is a side viewof ferrule, with a modified form of sharpener secured thereto.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
To form a simple and efficient pencil-sharpener, and to combine it with a pencil, so that it may at all times be ready for use and be easily attached and detached from the pencil, 1 construct my sharpener A with a hookshaped end, a, sharpened at its under side, and form on its shank b one or more files. On the back edge of the shank of this sharpener is fixed a projection, 13; The lower end of the shank of this sharpener is in any convenient manner secured to one end of a ferrule, O, the
other end of this ferrule being open to receive the end of a pencil, 0, whereby the sharpener may be attached to the pencil end. A sheath, D, tubular in form, and with a recessed channel or depression, E, formed on one side of the same, is made of sufficientlength and diameter to receive within it the sharpener A. One end of this sheath D is provided with screwthreads, or some other convenient means for securing thereto a rubber, e. Tl'ierecess E is of the form shown in Fig. 1, similar to a bayonet-joint slot, so that when the stud or projection B is inserted in this recess and the sheath D turned to bring this projection into the right-angular part f of the projection the sharpener is covered by the sheath and prevented from doing injury in the pocket of the user.
It is obvious that the sharpener A may not only be of the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, but it may be of any desired shape that will accomplish the purpose designed, no special claim being made to the shape or form of the sharpener.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, the pencil-sharpener A, having a hook'shaped end,a, file-shank Z), and projection B, the ferrule O to receive the pencil, and the sheath D, connected by a bayonet-joint recess with the projection of the sharpener and provided with a rubber, substantially as described.
JOEL JENKINS.
