SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,885, dated March 15, 1892.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES DIETZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes for Candy, dac., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

Myinvention consists of. a box for candy, &c., having a display or exhibition tray and means for rendering the interior of the box accessible, so as to supply the body with goods and remove the latter without disturbing said tray, as will be'hereinafter set forth.

Figure l represents a longitudinal section of a candy-box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view thereof, one end of the same being open and the lid removed. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a modification thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of a box, and B the lid thereof. One end C of the body is separated from the sides thereof and connected with the bottom by a piece D, of flexible material, forming a hinge whereby said end may be lowered, as will be seen in Fig. 2.

E designates a tray, which is located within the body at the upper end and permanently secured to the sides and ends thereof.

Above the tray E is a piece F, of glass or other transparent material, which is fitted in grooves G in the sides of the body A. Below said tray is the storage-space, within which is an auxiliary box H, the end J whereof adjacent to the hinged end C of thc body A extends above the bottom of the tray E to the top of the body A, so as to close against the end of the tray E and provide means whereby the hand may take hold of said piece J for,

conveniently removing the box H. At the sides of the end C are tongues K, which are adapted to enter the body A at the sides thereof for imparting vstability to the end C at the sides thereof when in closed position.

It will be seen that the tray E provides means for exhibiting or displaying the goods in an effective manner, and the box H receives the goods of which those in the tray E are samples.

When the lid B is removed, the end C is opened and the box H withdrawn, whereby access is had to the interior of the latter, so that goods may be taken therefrom. The box H may be readily replenished and then closed into the body A, after which the end C is returned to its normal position and the lid B applied, whereby the appearance of an ordinary box is presented, the end C prevented from opening, and the contents of the tray E and box I-I are protected from dust, insects, (be. The lid B may afterward be removed and the box placed on a shelf, counter, dac. Thus the samples are displayed without necessarily being touched. When desired, the box I-I may be removed and access had to the interior of the body A directly at the opening of the same occasioned by the outward and downward movement of` the end C. The

transparent coveringF may be dispensed with when desired; but as it is advantageous it is preferred to use the same.

In Fig. 3 the box H is dispensed with, and in lieu thereof I secure to the end C a strip L, which when said end is let down stands in vertical position, so that the contents of the box are prevented from rolling out of the box when access to the interior of the latter is desired, said strip L acting as a wall or guard against which the candy or contents of the box are caused to stop, the eect of which is evident. The tongues K are somewhat larger than those in Figs. l and 2, so that lateral displacement of the candy is prevented when the box is opened at the end C. When said end is closed, the tongues and strip fold into the box and the end is controlled by the cover B, as in the previous case. l

It is eviden'tthat the box is serviceable for other articles than candy.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A box having a tray at or about the top thereof, a storage-space below the same, an auxiliary box in said space, and a movable end whereby access maybe had to said space sides adapted to enter the body of the irstand auxiliary box and the same afterward named box, substantially as described. closed, substantially as described.
