VENDING-BOX.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 8, 1914.
Application filed April 27, 1914. Serial No. 834,700.
To all whom it may concern.' l
Be it known that :1,CrnxnLns F. MowLL, citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, inthe county oit Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vending-Boxes, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vending boxes, more particularly to that class in which the lid is so attached to the box that it may be turned beneath the box to expose the contents of the box without detaching the top therefrom.
The principal object of the present invention is to simplify the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices oitl this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this character which may be inexpensively manufactured and adapted without material structural change to receptacles of various sizes and forms.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the lid or cover is so attached that it may be folded underneath the box without being disconnected therefrom and also so attached that a sealing band or revenue stamp when attached need not be broken at more than one place when the lid is raised and folded beneath the box.
Another object oil the invention is to provide a device of this character which presents the same appearance as an ordinary box when closed. and in which the goods are as fully protected as in an ordinary box.
Vith these and other obiects in view the invention consists in certain novel features ol construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim: and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a perspective view of an approved form o'l" the device in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the lid or cover folded beneath the box. Fig. 3 is a transverse section with the parts arranged as in Fig. 1. Fig. l1 is a transverse section with the parts arranged as in Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views ot' the drawings by the same When cigar boxes as generally constructed with the coveror lid hingedly united at one side are employed in show cases, show windows and similar localities, much room is lost and the neat and attractive arrange- 1ment ol the goods rendered dillieult by the presence of the raised cover, and to dispose the cover or lid out oi sight without detaching it from the box the improvement herein shown and described has been devised.
The body o'l the box comprises the bottom 10, ends 11-1Q, front 13 and cover or lid 14. The ends l1--12 extend above the front and back a distance equal to the thickness oi' the cover or lid and the ends ot the latter bear against these elevated portions of the ends, as shown in Fig. 1.
The back 15 is 'formed with a. recess indicated at 1G and which extends between the ends 11-12 which thus form the ends of the recess. The recess 1G opens upwardly and outwardly and extends only part way down the rear side of the box, and hingedly united at 17 to the upper edge o the lower portion ot' the back is a supplemental back member 18, which fills the recess when in upper position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and folds against the lower portion oi the back when in lower position as shown in Figs. Q and el. At its outer edge the supplemental back member 18 is hingedly united as shown at 19 to the rear edge oi the top or lid 14.
The hinges may be ol any desired form, but are shown composed of strips ot' fabric as in ordinary cigar boxes, but it will be understood that it is not desired to limit the invention to any specific form of hinge.
By this arrangement the box presents the same appearance when closed as an ordinary cigar box, and is in condition to receive the revenue stamp in the usual manner, and then when the box is open, the lid or top mav be readily disposed beneath the bottom of the box and is out of the way and enables a plurality o'l the boxes to be arranged in close relation and without obscuring the contents. The lid or top will thus be preserved and retained in connected relation to the bodv of the box, and the well known and desirable trade shape and appearance of cigar and similar boxes likewise retained.
Obviously any other commodity than cigars may be vended from a box embodying this invention, and the box may be of any suitable or desired dimension and configuration, according to the kind and quantity of the commodity to be vended from cach box. A vending-box embodying this invention is practically as cheap to manufactureV as the ordinary cigar-box, as the fancy label usually applied to the inside of the lid, carrying the brand and any other information, may be dispensed with and a card, or other similar device substituted therefor.`
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A receptacle including a top and Vertical members with a recess in one of the vertical Copies of this patent may be obtained for members, andasupplemental member hingedly united respectively to the top and to said recessed member and foldable within the recess in one position and against the recessed member when in another position. n testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
