I V III/I/IIIIIm/III/IIII/ II/IIAWI/III jnmeflor, Kgarlarvl "W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. WORSLEY, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,855, dated August 19, 1890.
Application filed November 19, 1889. Serial No. 830,859. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. WoRsLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boxes for cigars, cigarettes, candy, and other merchandise, and has for its object to provide novel means whereby an indicating plate or card bearing the information which it is desired to give a customer or purchaser will automatically follow the hinged lid in its opening movement, and thereby display theplate or card and the advertising or other matter thereupon, the construction being also such that the plate or card is lowered into the box by the direct action of thehingedlid in its closingmovement,
whereby the plate or card is exposed and concealed without manipulating or touching the same with the fingers.
To accomplish this effect, my invention involves the features of construction, the combination or arrangement of parts, and the principles of operation hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box cmbodying my invention, showing the lid raised and the plate or card exposed. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same, showing the lid partially closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a plate or card at each end of the box, with a ribbon or band connecting the two plates or cards; and Fig. 4, a detail perspective View of the plate or card, showing its grooved end for receiving the operating-spring.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein-- The numeral 1 indicates a box having a hinged or swinging lid 2 and provided at one end with a partition 3, to form a nar row chamber, in which is arranged the plate or card hbearing the characters or informa tion which it is desired to display to the customer when the lid of the box is raised.
This plate or card is made to follow the lid in its opening and closing movements, and
to accomplish this in a simple and inexpen sive manner the plate or card is pivoted at one end to the box or a part of the box, as at 5, and is operated on by a spring 6, which acts to swing the plate or card upward as the box-lid is raised, while if the box-lid be lowered it operates directly on the plate or card and swings it into the chamber between the partition and the end wall of the box. The spring here shown is a simple elastic band secured at one end to the box, as at 7, passing around the pivoted end of the plate or card and secured thereto, as at 8. To retain the elastic band in correct position, the edge of the pivoted end portion of the plate or card is grooved, as at 9, to receive the band. The plate or card may carrysuch information as the retail cost of the merchandise or articles contained in the box or the name or brand of the goods.
In Fig. 3 a partition is arranged near each end wall of the box to form two chambers, in each of which is a swinging pivoted plate or card 4, and these plates or cards are connected by and carry a band or. ribbon IO, bearing any desired advertisement or similar matter.
The invention may be used on boxes for cigars, cigarettes, or any other merchandise, and provides a novelty which is useful as well as curious.
The plate or card may be given different forms to attract attention when the box is opened. For instance, the plate or card may represent any desired object.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A box having a hinged lid, a swinging plate or card pivoted to the box, and a spring acting on the plate or card and swinging it upward as the lid opens, substantially as described.
2. A box having a hinged lid, a partition in proximity to the end wall of the box to form a chamber, a swinging plate or card pivoted in the chamber, and a spring acting to swing the plate or card upward as the boxlid opens, substantially as described.
3. A box having a hinged lid, a swinging end, and a ribbon or band connecting said .plate or card pivoted to the box and having plate or card, substantially as described. 10 a groove, and aspring extending in the groove In testimony whereof I have affixed my sigand having its ends secured, respectively, to nature in presence of two witnesses.
5 the box and the plate or card, substantially CHARLES A. WORSLEY.
as described. Witnesses:
4:. A box having a hinged lid, a swinging O. H. MINTON,
spring-raised plate or card pivoted to each P. J. KELLEY.
