SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,316, dated February 23, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, PHILIP R. MILLER and PELEG BARKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Kearney, in the county of Buffalo and State of Nebraska, haveinvented a new and useful Combined Window Lock and Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined sash lock and holder; and the objects in view are to provide a device of very simple construction adapted to be applied to the sashes of windows and to automatically lock the same when released either up, down, or at any intermediate point.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a portion of a sash, the same being locked in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the sash, sash-frame, and lock. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the locking housing or bracket. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the cam. Fig. 5is a modified construction of cam.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing our invention we provide a metal housing 1, and the same is somewhat of V shape, in that it is formed upon an obtuse angle, and in transverse section is L- shaped. The lower edge of the housing is provided at its ends with apair of rearwardlydisposed perforated securing-ears 2, through which screws 3 are passed into the face of a side rail .of the sash, which rail, as is usual, moves vertically in the sash-guides or beams of the window-frame. Seated loosely in the housing 1, and when straight substantially the same length as the housing, is a fiat spring 6, the ends of which bear against the housing near its ends.
7 designates a segmental or quadrant shaped locking device, the curved face of which is wide and'adapted for frictional contact with the bead 5, againstwhich it is yieldingly held by means of the heretoforementioned fiat spring. At its rear side and at its apex and ends the said locking device is provided with narrow-edged lugs S, the center 1 of which serves as the fulcrum for the locking device to rock upon and rests against the flat spring. The face of the locking device, near its upper and lower ends or above and below its said finger the locking device is forced against the tension of the spring into the center of the housing, thereby removing the curved surface of the locking device from contact with the edge of the bead of the window-frame. It will now. be seen that the window is free to be raised and lowered to any height orcompletely closed. When the proper point has been reached, in order to effect a locking of the sash within the frame it is simply necessary to remove the forefinger from the lock, when the spring will force the same into contact with the bead, and the weight of the window will be sufficient to cause the lock to rotate slightly, so that its upper lug is in contact with the spring and to jam or wedge said locking device between the bead and spring, which is compressed against the rear wall of the housing.
In order to disconnect the lock or holder from the window-frame, the lower pin or stud is pressed upon, so as to rock the locking device, in which operation its fulcrum slides to the center of housing or the widest part thereof, and by reinserting the finger in the countersunk recess 10 the locking device may be pushed inwardly from the bead and the window raised and lowered.
In Fig. 5 we have illustrated a slight modification of thelocking device, the same consisting simply in the substitution therefor of a disk or ring 11,which is provided with the finger-receiving countersunk recess 12. The operation of this modification would be very similar to the one described, and would consist merely in the disk rotating in a direction opposite to that of the movement of the sash and becoming wedged between the housing and bead.
2 assets From the foregoing description it will be seen that by our invention We provide a combined sash lock andholderof great simplicity, durability, and efficiency, one in which the parts may be easily constructed and assembled upon a sash, and which may be most readily operated.
Having described our invention, what we claim is 1. The combination of the housing, L-shaped in'cross-section and V-shaped in elevation and provided with securing means, a flat spring loosely mounted in the housing, and a locking device movably mounted within the housing between the spring and the side of window-frame and adapted to be wedged by the window-sash against the said frame, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the housing, L-shaped in cross-section and V-shaped in elevation and provided with perforated securing-ears for the reception of screws, a flat spring loosely mounted in the housing, and the quadrant-shaped locking device located Within the housing and bearing against the spring, said locking device being provided at its rear side and at its ends with lugs 8 and upon its front face with upper and lower pins or studs 15, and between the two with the countersunk recess 10, substantially as specified.
