To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM I-I. BURK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of simple and ellicient latch which will initiallyautomatically latch and retain the window (or other swinging member) in latched position against rebound or disengagement, and which may then, by manipulation of an operating handle, be operated to draw the window sash i'nto close-fitting engagement with its frame, in which position it will be firmly secured andy maintained without any tendency to work loose. With this and` incidental objects and advantages in view I have devised and invented the. embodiment of my invention illustrated in thedaccompanying drawings and hereinafter described, the essential elements of which are more particularly recited in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure l shows in vertical cross-section a portion of a window frame and a partly latched window to which my invention (shown in elevation) is applied; Fig. 2 isa similar view showingthe-latch and keeper in completely latched engagement; Fig. 3 is a view of the latch and keeper, the parts being viewed in a direction at right angles to the direction of view in Fig. 2, and the handle, and part of the window frame being partly broken away to better show the construction of the parts; Fig. 4 is a plan view'of latch, parts lying above it being broken away; and Fig. 5 1s a perspective of the latch member alone.

In the particular and preferred form of embodiment of my invention shown 1n the drawings, the lower frame member of the window frame consists of a section of structuraliron 1 forming a portion of the wall structure and having an outwardly disposed face 2. Secured to the strip 1 is an |Lshaped metal bar 3, in the vertical member of which is pivotally mounted the latch member of my fastening device. Thelower rail of the window or sash consists of a flanged bar 4, which may conveniently be made of the shape shown in cross-section in Fig. 2, with a depending flange 5 and a horizontal top plate 6, to the lower side of which latter portion is secured the keeper 7 of the fastener. rIhe window is hinged at its top to the casing, and if desired the side and top members of the window and window opening may be formed with members corresponding to those already described at the bottom, so that the flanges of the window will abut against the outwardly arranged faces of the structurall the bar 3, and this latch includes an operating handle 8 to the pivot 9 of which is pinned a short arm or cam block 10, a lug 10a projecting in the opposite direction being provided to limit its rotation in a righthand direction by contact with the top of the base of a bearing bracket 21 secured to the bar 3 and having a vertical portion 22 Y formed with a bearing which engages and pivot. As most clearly shownin Figs. 1, 2 and 4, the block 10 is formed with an outer inclined cam-face 11 which coperates, as
4supports the outermost end of, the latchthe window is closed, with the downwardly directed portion 7EL of the keeper to rock the latch and lift the handle against gravity and the stress of a spring 2Ol housed in a recess formed in the hub of. the block 10, one end of which spring engages said hub and the other the face of the bar 3. When the window is nearly closed, the keeper clears the high point of the cam-face 11 and the spring, assisted by the weight of the handle causes the latch to rock in the opposite direction,
and the uppermost, vertical section 12 of its inner face `to engage the keeper. Inasmuch as the face 12 exhibits no cam action, no re- 7 bound of the windovs7 will act upon it to rock the latch in an opposite direction and release the Window. Below the face l2 the block 10 is formed with a cam surface 13 which by operation of the handle 8 may be caused to react upon the keeper to draw the window tightly to its seat in the window frame. As the window seats firmly and tightly into place, the lower end of the cam surface 13 is reached and a lower, plane, retaining surface 14, normal or substantially normal to the aXis of rotation of the latch, is brought opposite the edge of the keeper. Since this face is entirely incapable of exerting any camming cooperation with the keeper, the Window will remain firmly seated, and no amount of jarring or vibration will have any effect in tending to cause the latch to become disengaged. i
It will be observed that the mechanism is extremely comipact and when the window is closed all of the elements (except the handle) are tightly housed. `Then the window is open the keeper is sheltered beneath the flange 5 of the lower rail of the window, and the ivindov itself affords some protection to the latching member. Owing to the simplicity of construction of the parts and their sheltered arrangement, my novel fastening device is therefore little liable to derangement or deterioration from destructive weather conditions. However, it is' obvious that the latch mechanism may be applied to many structures to which these considerations do not apply, and my claims to such mechanism are in no wise limited to the particular window construction herein described.

A fastening device comprising a keeper and a manually-operable pivoted latch member, said latch member being formed on one side with a cam face arranged to automatically coperate with the keeper when moved against it to effect rocking of the latch member, and on the other side being formed with an initial engaging face and with a cam face adjacent said engaging face and ar ranged to coperate with the keeper by manual operation of the latch member.
2. A fastening device comprising a keeper and a manually-operable ypivoted latch member, said latch member being formed on one side with a cam face arranged to automatically coperate with the keeper when moved against it to eect rocking of the latch member, and on the other side being 'formed with neonata -a cam face adapted to coperate lwith the keeper by manual operation of the latch member and with a retaining face normal to the aXis of the pivot of the latch.
3. A fastening device comprising a keeper and a manually-operable pivoted latch member, said latch member being formed on one side With a cam face arranged to automati cally coperate With the'keeper when moved against it to effect rocking of the latch member, and on the other side being formed with an initial engaging face and with an inter nediate'cam face and with a final retaining ace.
4:. A fastening device comprising a keeper and a latch consisting of a manually-operable pivoted rocking arm yieldingly urged .toward said keeper, said arm at its end being formed on one side with a cam face arranged to automatically coperate with the keeper y when moved against it to effect rocking of the arm, and on the other side beingformed with an initial engaging face and with a cam face adjacent said engaging face and arranged to coperate with the keeper by manual operation of the rocking arm.
5. A fastening device comprising a keeper and a latch consisting of a pivoted rocking arm and a rigidly connected oppositely arranged handle of preponderating weight tending to urge said arm toward said keeper, said arm at its end being formed on one side .with a cam face arranged to automatically coperate with the keeper when moved against it to effect rocking of the arm, and on the other side being formed with an initial engaging face and with a cam face adjacent said engaging face and arranged to cooperate with the keeper by manual operation of the handle.
6. In structures of the character described and including a Windo.7 frame, a swinging window having its lower rail provided on its outer side with a depending flange arranged to abut against the window frame, the Window frame being provided on its inner side with an upstanding flange abutting the lower rail of the Window, a depending keeper secured to the lower window rail and arranged Within the depending flange, and a catch member pivoted in said upstanding flange of the casing and having an en gaging portion arranged within said upstanding flange and an operating handle without the same.
