Description

Bti
ylilateated lli/lay l/t, i939.,
.applica-tion filed Octolier MEI, i927. Serial No.
lllie present invention relates to door latches embodying the use of a latch operating' handle arranged yat opposite sides ot a door and adapted iter latch releasing' movement upon pulling,` the respective handie member outwardly away :trom the adjacent side of the door.
rlhc invention has `for an object to provide a latch operating; handle oit this character which necessitates a pullingmovement away from the door thereby preventing accidental release ot the latch by the contact oit an animal, person or other object coming; into engagement therewith.
llt further object is to provide an apparatus ot this character olf simple and practical construction, ellicient and reliable in periiornranee, which may be easily and quickly arranged in operative position upon the door, relatively inexpensive to nninul'acture and otherwise well adapted :tor the purpose iior which the same is intended.
@ther objects and advantages reside in the special construction and combination et the various elements comprising the invention, reference beingi had to the accompany ingu; drawings forming' a part hereofj wherein:-
Figure Il is a front elevational view oit the latch in operative position upon the door,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the door talren on the line 2-52/ oi Figure l,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view talren along a line 3*?) of Figure l,
Figure Il is a plan view ot the plate torming the pivotal mounting :tor the latch operating handle, and
Figure 5 is a View in elevation ot the blanlr trom which the latch keeper is Referring to the drawing in detail, the invention comprises a double handle member indicated Igenerally at 5 composed ot an in* terinediate section G extending1 diagonally through a slotted opening 7 formed in a door 8 Vand terminating in handle sections 9 arranged at opposite sides ot' the door in vertically extending` positions and disposed parallel With respect to each other, said nandles being maintained in spaced relation trom the adjacent ace of the door by means et inturned end sections l0. At one side oit the door adjacent the opening is ar 'anged a plate l1 having one end thereot indicated at 12 extending1 at an oblique angle outwardly from the tace of the door lwith its end thereof provided with a vertically extending slotted opening` i3. rFhe upper edge of the end l2 oit' the plate is bent backwardly upon itself to i'orm a bearing for a pin 15 carried by an :intermediate section 6 of the handle whereby to form a pivotal mounting for the handle upon the plate. The intermediate section G et the handle extending at the opposite side of the door trom the plate ll is provided with an opening` 16 through which entends a horizontally disposed latch member l'i' having; one end pivotally attached to a plate 18 attached to the ndoor, with the opposite end of the latch adapted iior engagement with a keeper 19 secured to the door jainb 20.
As shown by Figure 5 of the drawing the latch lrecpei' may be termed 'from a Vstrip ot metal, such as for instance strap iron having an intermediate section 2l :termed with a noteli along one edge adapted to receive the latch and retain the door in closed position. (lne end of the blank trom which the keeper 'termed may be bent at right angles to the intermediate section 2l along the dotted line shown at 23 to :term an attachingl base 2li 'for the keeper. The opposite end oit the blank indicated at 25 has its edge corresponding to the edge of the intermediate section 2l formed with the notch 22 substantially cut down and may also be bent alongl the line indicated at 26 in a direction toward the base 24 in substantially triangular formation as more clearly illu@- trated in Figure 8. 'lhe end 25 thus cooperates with the intermediate section 2l to prevent the bendingot the keeper inwardly should an object accidentally strike against the same.
in ear 27 is formed on, the inner tace of the plate l1 and disposed within the slotted opening 7 ol the door to which is attached one end et a spring- 28 connect/ing` the intermediate section 6 oit the handle whereby to normally retain each end et the handle inwardly against the respective sides of the door.
ln the operation oit the device it will be apparent that the latch 17 may be raised in engagement with the lreeper moving either handle member 9 outwardly away :trom the door. rlhe springu 28, upon release oit the handle, will return the handle into its normal position as indicated in Figure 2 so that upon the closing of the door the Alatch Will properly engage t-he keeper and retain the door in closed position.
It is obvious that the invention is susceptible of various changes and modifications. wlthout departing from the spirit or scope n of the invention or sacrificingr any of its advantages, and I accordingly claim all such forms of the device to WhichI am entitled. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A In a device of the class described, a latch operating member comprising a double ended handle including an intermediate section extending diagonally through an opening formed in a door and terminating` at opposite sides thereof in handle members eX- tending `in parallel relation to each other,
said handle members having their ends extending inwardly in abutting relation with the door whereby to retain said handle outv Wardly from the adjacent sides of the door,
a plate attached at the one side of the door having its upper end -formed with a slotted opening for receiving the intermediate section of the handle, means for pivotally mounting the handle at the upper edge of Said plate, a latch arranged at the opposite side of the door and connected with the handle for operation thereby, a keeper engageable with one end of the latch and a spring yieldably connectingJ the handle with the plate whereby to normally retain the opposite end ol.E the handle against the respective sides of the door.
In testimony whereof I ailix my Signature.
