I. W. BROWN.
COMBINATION SASH LOGKAND LIFT.
No 605,196. Patented June 7,1898.
WITNESSES INVENTOR w [7 B7 77 @j NITED STAT S ATENT OFFICE.
IRA W. BROWN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT LATTA, 0F SAME PLACE.
COMBINATION SASH LOCK AND LIFT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 605,196, .dated June '7, 1898. Application filed October 30, 1897. Serial No. 656,947. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA W. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in
the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Sash Lock and Lift, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sash-lifts for window-sashes, and it has reference particularly to a device of that class which combines with the lift proper a suitable locking means for securing the sash in its lowermost position, said locking means being adapted to be operated to release the sash Whenever the latter is raised by means of said lift.
I have fully illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the stiles or bottom rails of a window-frame and Window-sash, showing my invention in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of my invention detached from said stiles, and Fig. 3 shows in perspective the keeper for the locking means.
Similar numerals of reference indicatecorresponding parts in the drawings.
In thedrawings the numeral 1 denotes a rectangular case which contains the locking mechanism hereinafter described and which is provided with suitable securing-ears 2, that are perforated for the reception of screws or other'means for retaining said case in position against the inner face of the bottom rail or stile of a window-sash, as shown in Fig. 1. The rear wall of said case is preferably eliminated to simplify and cheapen the construction.
The numeral 3 represents a socket or keeper which is set in and is secured to the bottom rail of the windowframe beneath the said case 1 and which, as hereinafter described, is properly constructed for the reception and engagement of the locking mechanism. The said keeper is provided with an ear 4, and said ear and the bottom wall of said keeper are perforated for the reception of suitable securing means, such as screws, &c.
In the case 1 is a bell-crank lever 5, fulcrumed on a transversely=arranged pintle 6 as a bearing. One arm 7 of said lever depends from the fulcruming-point of the latter downwardly through a suitable aperture 8 in the lower wall of the case and terminates in a hook 9. The other arm 10 of said lever projects toward the front wall, as shown. A drawpiece or lift proper, 11, is loosely mounted in the upper portionof said case, so as to move in the direction of its length, and projects through a suitable opening 12, arranged in the upper wall of said case. The upper end of this lift is suitably shaped, as shown, for the reception of the finger of the opera tor in raising the window, and its is provided with a projection or hook 13, which extends at an angle to the lift and beneath and in operative contiguity to the arm 10 of the lever, which lever said lift is adapted to operate, as is obvious. I have shown in the drawings a strengthening-rib 14, situated on the back of the lift at the angle between its upper and lower portions. A slot is out in the top wall of the case and at right angles to the opening 12 for the accommodation of said rib.
Between the front wall of the case and the arm 7 of the lover a V-shaped steel spring 16 is arranged, which normally retains the lever in the position shown in the drawings. The said spring may obviously be detachably arranged in place, so that when broken it may be easily replaced by a new one.
The socket 3 is provided on its rear wall with a transverse projection 17 for the engagement of the hook 9 of the lever-arm 7, and said projection has an inclined upper face upon which the hook wipes in seating.
For the purpose of insuring a better engagement between the lever-arm 10 and the projection 13 of the lift as the latter moves up,- wardly and as the former moves in the arc of a circle about the fulcruming-point as a center and to assist in limiting the movement of said lift if the aperture 8 is not of the proper size. for that purpose pairs of lugs 18, 19, and may be provided. I have shown the pairs of lugs 18 and 19 as arranged on the side walls of the case and the front face of the lift, respectively. They have coacting inclined faces that are adapted to wipe upon each other as the lift moves upwardly to force said lift rearwardly and closer to the lever lower end projection 13. The pair of lugs 20 is situated on the side Walls of said case, but opposite the rear face of'the lift, and this pair of lugs is adapted to coact with the other pairs in an obvious manner to limit the upward movement of said lift.
The operation of the device Will be understood without explanation.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to beconlined to the same as so described, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of the invention Without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A combination lift and lock for a Windowsash consisting of a case adapted to be secured to the sash-stile,a bell-crank lever fulcrumed in said case and having one of its arms depending from the fulcruming-point, the free end of said arm being hooked and projecting from said case, a detachable V- shaped spring arranged between said arm of the lever and the wall of the case, a vertically-movable lift arranged in said case and projecting therefrom, the inner end of said lift being booked and operatively engaging the other of said lever-arms, lugs 18 and 20 situated on the side walls of said case in contiguity to said lift and upon opposite sides thereof, the under faces of said lugs 18 being beveled, beveled lugs 19 arranged on said lift and adapted to wipe on the lugs 18, and a keeper adapted to be engaged by said hooked arm of the lever and secured to the stile of the windoW-frame,substantially as described. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. IRA W. BROIVN, \Vitnesses:
WM. F. FITZPATRICK, THOMAS OKEEFE.
