SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,080, dated April 22, 1890.
Application iled June 17, 1889. Serial No. 314,552. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY STIN- sON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scandia, in the county of Republic and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to latches and means for holding and releasing the latch-bolt.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction of this class of latches and increase their efficiency and durability and reduce the number of operating parts to a minimum.
The improvement consists of the novel construction and combination of the parts,which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, parts being broken away, of my invention, showing its application. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line .r of Fig. l. Fig. is a side View of the lock, the obverse side of the casing being removed, showing the operation of the latch-bolt by dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line y y of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latch-bolt.
The door A has a rabbet a on its front edge, and the j amb B a corresponding rabbet b for the rabbet a to strike against. The face-plate E of the casing F has an offset c, which conforms to the rabbeted edge of the door, as shown most clearly in Fig. l. The latch-bolt G is elbow-shaped, and has a vertical extension g at the junction of the horizontal and vertical arms Il and II', respectively, by which it is pivotally connected to the case by the pin f. rlhe vertical arm Il has a projection h, which plays between two stops Z) and b to limit the movements of the latclrbolt, and on which the iiat spring I bears or presses to hold the latclrbolt at any point between its extreme movements or at the end of either movement. The head J on the vertical arm II is square on its front end, and is of uniform thickness in cross-section from its front to its rear end, the top and the bottom edges curving on the arc of circles whose centers are coincident with the pivotal support or pin f of the latch-bolt.
The Hat spring I is connected with the case at its rear end, and its front end extends through an opening in the faceplate E of the case, and is provided with alateral extension i on its side7 which extends beyond the face of the oset e, and which engages with the rabbet ZJ or some other part of the doorjamb, by which it is pushed in when the door is closed to disengage the spring I from the projection h, whereby the head of the latch is free to be projected beyond the face-plate and engage with the door-jamb and hold the door shut.
The latch-bolt operates by gravity; but to facilitate its action and cause it to respond quickly a light spring K is provided, and is secured at one end to the arm II, and its free end presses against a stop or the upper part of the case. The thumb-latch L, of ordinary construction and arrangement, is provided to operate the latch-bolt acting on the arm H.
IVhen the door is open, the latch-bolt is held retracted by the iat springI bearing against the projection 71., and when the door is closed the said spring I is released from the projection h and the latch is projected and holds the door closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a lock, the combination, with the case having an offset c in its face-plate, and the latch-bolt having the extension 7L, of the iiat spring secu red at one end to the case and hav- .ing in the other end extended beyond the faceplate about the depth of the said oifset and having the lateral enlargement t' for the purpose described, the said spring pressing against the extension 71. to hold the latch-bolt in the required position, substantially as specified.
