BOOK OR CASE COVER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,732, dated February 9, 1892. Application filed May 18, 1891. Serial No. 3953,1211 (No model.)

To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that I, SEBASTIAN A. STANGE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book or Case Covers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a spring fastener or retainer for covers of books OI Cit/BBS.

The invention consists of a clasp formed of a piece of thin sheet metal, bent near its :5 center so that one end overlaps the other, said clasp being inserted in a double flap or eX- tension formed in one with one of the covers,

and a narrow strip of thin metal inserted in the other cover, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the flat metal spring-clasp before it is inserted in the cover. Fig. 2 represents a pocket memoran- 2 5 dum book provided with a fastener or retainer embodying my invention, the book being closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the book open. Fig. 4 shows the position of the flap and cover when about to be fastened.

A represents a spring-clasp formed of a piece of thin sheet metal, preferably steel, bent over near its center so that one part or end overlaps the other, the lower portion a being somewhat longer than the upper por- 3 5 tion Z), the two ends being curved, as shown.

B is a book, and C C the covers thereof. The cover 0 is formed with a double extension-piece c, in which the spring-clasp A is secured, and in the cover C is embedded a spring or strip 0 of thin sheet metal, prefer- 4o ably steel.

To close a book or case provided with a spring-clasp A and spring a embodying my invention, the double flap c is first folded over. The cover C is then bent into position shown in Fig. 4, so that its edge rests upon the lower portion of the double flap 0. It is then released and the spring 0 forces it between the double flap, the space between the flaps being just sufficient to allow it to enter 5o freely, and the covers are then securely held, the spring-clasp retaining the edge of the cover C. To open the book or case, the cover C has simply to be drawn out from between the double flap c.

Although I prefer to employ the spring a in the cover 0, it might in some cases be dispensed with.

Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. A book or case having one cover formed with a double extension or flap, in combination with a spring-clasp of sheet metal bent near its center so that one end overlaps the other, substantially as shown and described.

2. A book or case having one cover formed .with a double extension or flap and a springclasp of sheet metal inserted therein, and the other cover having a spring of flat metal inserted therein, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
