L. A. LIPMAN. MEMORANDUM BOOK 0on3 FASTENER.
No. 395,155. Patented Dec. 25,1888.
N. PETERS, Phuiwl-Hho npher, Wnhlngwn, DJ;
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
LEIVIS A. LIPMAN, OF NElV YORK, Y., ASSIGNOR TO IZOORUM A: PEASE, O1 SAME PLACE.
MEMORANDUM-BOOK-COVER FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,155, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed Ma '7, 1888. Serial No. 273,111. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, LEWIS A. LIPMAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in lilemorandum-Book-Cover Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to an improvement in the fastening devices of memorandum or account books intended for the pocket; and it consists in certain details, which will be first fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
The main objects of my invention are to form a means of firmly securing the flaps of the book together, and in such a manner that both the flaps and the fastener cr locking device will not protrude upon the sides or covers.
In those account-books which have heretofore been provided with fastening attachments the attachments have been so arranged as to interfere with the movement of the book in the pocket or even to tear the sides of the pocket; and my improvement is designed to enable the fastening of the covers of the account-book together so as to hold the book in a closed condition without in any manner interfering with the placing of the book in or removing it from the pocket.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pocket memorandum or account book embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on a much larger scale.
In the drawings I form both the covers of the memorandum or account book with end flaps, 2 2, adapted to fold down one upon the other at the end of the book. Upon one flap is fixed the stud 3 and upon the other the eye l, adapted to engage in the manner shown, and so hold the flap and the covers of the book firmly together. The stud is preferably .made as shown, with spring-arms 5 clamped to the body 6 by a flanged ring, 7, and the whole united to the under flap of the book by a flanged sleeve, 8, which is passed through the hole made in said flap and expanded within the body 6 by reason of the conical or dished form of the top of the body of the stud. The eye is formed with the flange 9, which is pressed against the under surface of the outer flap when the eye is forced through said flap and expanded by the conical inner side of a ring, 10, which is seated within the outer ornamental cap or button and held therein by a second ring, 12. This construction of button enables the eye to be readily removed from the stud or snapped thereon when it is desired to open or close the book, while, as already indicated, the position of the button, by reason of the formation of the cover with two flaps turned down at the ends, locate said fastening in such a position as to cause no i11- jury to the user of the memorandum-book. By this means the desired object of my invention is attainednamely, the locating of the fastening or locking device wholly upon the edge of the book.
I do not limit myself to any particular construction of fastening or locking device, but have shown and described one which appears to be best adapted to the purpose.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A memorandum book cover fastener consisting of overlapping flaps carried by the covers, each having a locking device, substantially as herein shown 2. A memorandum -book cover fastener consisting of overlapping flaps carried by the covers, a spring-stud on one flap, and an eye adapted to receive said stud 011 the other flap, substantially as shown and described.
3. A memorandum -book cover fastener consisting of overlapping flaps carried by the covers, which flapslie wholly upon the edge of the book when folded down into position, as shown.
4. A memorandum book cover fastener consisting of overlapping flaps carried by the covers, which flaps carry corresponding springstud and eye and lie wholly upon the edge of the book when locked in position, as shown and described.
LEWIS A. LIPMAN.
