D. LO N DO N UNSECURED SEPARABLE FASTENER FOR MATTRESS COVERS AND THE LIKE Filed on. 4, 1924 Fatented Aug. 4, 1925.
omrsn DAVID LONDON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Application filed October 4, 1924. Serial No. 741,611.
To allw/wmit may concern:
Be it known that 1. DAVID LONDON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, ll'faryland, have invented cer tain new and useful Unsecured separable Fasteners for Mattress Covers and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to snap fasteners particularly suitable and intended for articles that are to be washed and the main object of the invention is the provision of a snap fastener that is capable of association with such an article in operative fashio without being secured thereto.
Heretofore snap fasteners have not been used in unsecured relation with the particular article. but, on the other hand, have been secured thereto in permanent fashion with the result that such fasteners are usually distorted and made useless during the laundry process. Also, the article bearing the fasteners are very frequently ripped and torn, or otherwise mutilated, in the process of laundering by reason of the permanent association of the fasteners with the article. The invention herein set forth obviates all these disadvantages.
The snap fasteners comprising my inven tion are especially suitable for the closure flap of mattress covers that are placed over the type of mattress commonly used. Such mattress covers require a comparatively large number of fasteners and to secure them requires much time and effort, it being impossible to remove them without mutilating both the fasteners and the mattress cover, whereas mv fasteners being totally unsecured may be placed in operative association with the cover and removed therefrom in a very short time and without any trouble or appreciable effort. Other advantageous uses for the fasteners will be recognized in view of this disclosure.
For a complete understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a mattress cover having a closure flap provided with unsecured fasteners of the type embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the flap showing the eyelet through which the head of the fastener passes;
F 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged top plan view of the socket member.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 10 designates the mattress cover having the closure flap 11 provided with eyelets 12 which match the eye lets 13 in the bottom and side portions of the cover. These eyelets 12 or 13 are made in any suitable manner and may be made as ordinary button holes are made being reinforced by stitching 14, for example, as shown by Fig. 2. One part of the separable fastener passes through the aligned openings 12 and 13 and the other part is separablv attached thereto to thereby hold the fastener in place.
Referring to Fig. 3, the reference character 15 refers to the head part of the fastener and the socket part is designated by the reference cha'acter 16. The head part is preferably made from a single piece of metal and comprises a stud 17 having the peripheral groove 18 and the bottom annular flange 18. The socket is of the resilient type and comprises the external button 19 and the internal cap 20 having a flange 21 having spaced radial divisions 21 to impart resiliency thereto. From an inspection of 3 it will be noted that the eyelets 12 and 13 are but slightly larger in diameter than the stud 17 and the stud 17 is of such length as to receive the two layers of the closure between the flange 18 of the head part of the fastener and the socket without permitting excess longitudinal movement of the stud through the eyelets. While 1 have shown the part 11 as a closure flap for mattress covers, it will be understood that this part may be merely the marginal portion of any article and 11 which designates on the drawing the bottom marginal portion of a mattress cover may designate the marginal portion of any article, these marginal portions 11 and 11 overlying, by preference, with the eyelets 12 and 13 in alignment for the passage therethrough of the studs 17 which are held in place by the sockets 16.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that certain changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the inven tion and the invention is not to be considered as limited to the specific disclosure except Within the terms of the appended claim.
\Vhat I claim is:
A separable fastener for securing apertured marginal portions together comprise ing a head member having a flange at one end thereof and an annular groove intermediate its ends, and a socket member com prising a rigid outer member having a continuous surface on one side thereof and an opening in the other side thereof, and a resignature.
