SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Batent No. 467,487, dated. January 19, 1892.

Be it known that LSAMUEL WHITTIER, of Leoininster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawer- Pnlls, of which the following is a specification. This invention has forits object to provide an improved drawer-pull which shall also form a convenient frame or holder for a label or to name-plate, and which shall firmly retain and readily expel the said label or plate, as may be required.

The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front view of a drawer-pull embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In the drawings, a a represent the front pieces of my improved drawer-pull, the said pieces forming a rectangular frame having an opening I) in the center. I

0 represents the main portion of the drawerpull, to which the front pieces are attached, and which is affixed to the front of the drawer.

(1 cl represent two strips which are inserted 0 between the main portion 0 and the front or frame pieces 0:, thus forming a groove 6 behind said frame which is adapted to receive a strip or label f. The strip f may have any suitable lettering or marking on its front face 5 designating the contents of the drawer to which the pull is applied.

The outer edges of the parts a, c, and dare formed, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to aiford a suitable finger-grip, whereby the pull may be grasped to pull the drawer out.

g represents a shaft which is journaled in the main portion 0 of the drawer-pull, and which is provided on its upper end with a notched or milled head g, whereby it may be rotated. Thelower end of the shaft g is preferably square and passes through a similar opening in the center of a toothed wheel it, said wheel being located in a recess h out in the main member 0, preferably about the cenfor thereof. The shaft g is journaled in a hole bored in the said main portion cin such proximity to the front face thereof that when said shaft is engaged with the wheel h, as above described, the teeth of said wheel will project slightly from the front face of said 5 5 main portion 0. It will thus be seen thatwhen the strip or label f is inserted in the groove 6 and pushed home to the endthereof its rear face will come in contact with the teeth of the wheel h and will rotate the same I and the shaft 9. hen it is desired to with draw the strip ffrom the groove e, it is only necessary to rotate the shaft g by means of the head g in the direction opposite to that in which it was rotated by the insertion of the strip. The teeth of the wheel will then engage the rear face of the said strip and will cause the strip to move outwardly, thus enabling the operator to grasp its outer end as soon as the same clears the outer end of the groove and draw the strip out.

It will also be observed that the strip or label fits nicely in said groove, and does not project from the end thereof, and that said strip is held by the engagement of the teeth of the wheel 71 with its rear face, so that it cannot be accidentally dislodged from the groove c by tipping of the drawer in any direction.

Another advantage of myimproved device is that the strip or label is readily removable from the groove 2 by means of the wheel 7i acting on its rear face, thus obviating the use of sharp or pointed instruments on its face to start its outward movement, this operation often defacing or scratching the face of the label and spoiling its appearance, a danger which is entirely avoided by the use of my deo vice.

I may make various changes in the form and construction of the device without departing from the nature and spirit'thereof. For instance, I may make the main portion 0 5 and the pieces d in one piece, the piece 0 being cutaway to form the groove 6 in its front face, and various other changes equally obvious may be made without departingfrom the invention.

I prefer to make the shaft 9 of tapering form at its lower end, as shown in the drawings, so that when said shaft is inserted in the opening in the center of the wheel h it may be pressed down into the same and may frictionally engage the same, thus preventing the shaft from dropping out should the drawer be inverted accidentally or otherwise.

I claim The improved drawer-pull having its edges formed to afford a suitable finger-grip and having a groove for the reception of a strip or label, the front portion'of the structure being cut awayin front of said groove so as to show the front face of said label, a toothed wheel, and a shaft whereby the same is rotated, said shaft being journaled in the drawer pull in such proximity to the slot or groove therein that when engaged with said'shaft said wheel will have its teeth projecting into the groove, so that they will engage the rear face of the strip when the same is inserted therein, as set forth.
