SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,776, dated February 5, 1895.

Application filed April 17, 1894.

To all whom 2125 may concern.-

Be it known that I, Fnsrus D. BASNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mannington, in the county of Marion and State of West V irginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Movers; and I do declare the following who a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in box lifters, and has for its object to pro vide asimple and convenient instrument for moving boxes and bundles from high shelves and points above arm-reach.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view showing the device in side-elevation. Fig. 2- is a view showing the device in front elevation. Fig. 3-- is a detail perspective view of the sliding step, and Fig. 4: is a detail view of the preferred form of cord-fastener.

Referring to the drawings, the letter A, indicates the pole, which may be of any desired shape and length. In the drawings it is shown as rectangular in cross-section,- but this is simply a matter of convenience. A longitudinal groove a, is provided in one face of the pole, and forms a way in which the step B, slides up and down. A pulley C, is journaled in hearings in the pole, preferably at one end of the slide-way, and a cord D, is attached at one end to the sliding step and passes over the pulley and down through eyes a, to the handle A, where a suitable device, comprising in the present instance a double spring clasp, is secured to the pole near the handle for conveniently fastening the cord, to hold the sliding step at any desired point.

To the upper end of the pole, and preferably on that face in which the-slide way is formed, is secured the flat end-piece G, which projects a convenient distance beyond the end of the pole, and in practice is designed to be inserted under the lid of a box between the downwardly fitting edge thereof and the body of the box. This operation enables the operator to draw the box forward from its shelf a distance equal to or greater than the length of the step, which is then drawn up, by means of the cord D, till it fits against the bottom of the box. The cord being hitched in the spring clasp fixes the position of the step. The box is now firmly held and may be drawn entirely from the shelf and moved as desired. The box will then be held securely and may be moved as desired. The operation of replacing the box upon the shelf is a corresponding one, and is too obvious to require explanation. An outwardly-projecting hook H, is also provided on the upper end of the pole, for convenience in handling light bundles, packages, Ate. It is designed to be hooked under the binding-twine of the bundie or package or under some other convenient portion of the article, which may then be moved without the use of the step.

My box-lifter as thus described is simple in construction and in operation, and will be found a great convenience in shoe-stores, general stores and other shops where a large portion of the goods is stored on shelves. It can be constructed at a low cost and much time and labor may be saved by its use.
