ADJUSTABLE STORE-SHELF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,469, dated April 5, 1892.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN BAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Genevieve, in the county of St. Genevieve and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Store-Shelves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to display or sto rage shelves to be used in stores where a limited space must be utilized to the best advantage, and providing for a large amount of displaysurface within circumscribed limits. To accomplish this purpose, I provide-one or more series or nests of shelves suspended from the ceiling at or near the center of the store and midway between the counters extending lengthwise of the room; or, should there bel but one line of shelves at the side of the room, the nests of shelves may be suspended so as to be brought into view upon the opposite side, or they may be located at the rear of the room. I do not confine myself to the location shown in the drawings, as any convenient place may be selected where it is possible to suspend them.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the center of a store, showing the arrangement of shelves, two being shown in their elevated position and the other lowered. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, showing shelves elevated and lowered in dotted lines; Fig. 3, elevation of a clutclrpulley.

1 is the room, showing the side shelves 2, such as are in ordinary use and having the usual counter 3, extending parallel with the side shelves. Suspended from the ceiling are the nest of shelves 4, which may be subdivided, as is shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2 that is, having a partition 5 with the shelves G at each side of said partition. Said shelves may be arranged to face toward the front and rear of the room, as shown, or to face to each side, as circumstances may require, to get the proper display or access to the goods.

The casing containing the shelves may be rectangular or any desired shape or size, rectangular being shown, the parts o. b c cl forming, respectively, the top, bottom, and sides. To the latter the shelves are secured. l

The cords may be in a longitudinal line with store, as shown in Fig. 1, or transverse, as shown in Fig. 2.

To the top or upper portion 7 of each nest is secured an eye 8, to which one end of a cord 9 is secured, after which it extends upward and over a pulley 10, thence over pulley 11 and down under pulley 12 to pulley 18, thence up over clutch 14, and thence down a sufficient distance to be within easy reach of the operator, the pulleys 10, 11, and 14 being secured to the ceiling, while pulleys 12 and 13 are secured to the top 7 of the nests.

The shelves may be lowered to the door, upon which they'may rest, or may be held at any elevation by allowing the cam-wheel or the pulley to clamp the cord, such clampwheel being a subject of every-day merchandise. Consequently I do not claim the oonstruction, but use it as a means of convenience; but a substitute may be used-that is, the cord may be secured to a projection at any convenient point within reach.

It will be seen that the storage capacity and display-surface are increased by the use of these shelves, as when desired they are easily brought within reach, and when not in use of free passage beneath them, or for such articles as itmay be necessary to keep on the floor.

By the use of a cord and system of pulleys, as shown, the nest of shelves will always remain in a vertical position, regardless of its elevation from the floor or distance from the ceiling.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a salesroom or store where increased shelf-room is required for the storage or display of goods, a receptacle containing one or more compartments with one or more shelves in each compartment, having secured thereto an eye in the center of the top and two pulleys in a line with and equidistant from said eye and having a cord fastened to said eye, thence extending upward and over two pul- Vthey are moved to such an elevation as to allow IOO leys fastened to the ceiling, thence downward under the two pulleys in the top of said receptacle, thence upward again over a third pulley in the ceiling, and held in any given position by a clamp or other suitable means, said pulleys in the ceiling,y corresponding, respectively, in position with the eye and pulleys in the top of said receptacle, which by means of said oord and pulleys is thus adapted to be raised or lowered and hold in posi- 1o tion at any given height, substantially as described.
