To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVAN J. SHIPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a box for shipping padlocks and similar articles, having improved means for displaying the articles when the box is opened.

It is also aimed to provide a device of this kind in which the lid of the box, when in closed as well as open position, supports the sample articles, which are preferably located to correspond with compartments in the box body in which a number of corresponding articles are adapted to be contained. 7

To these ends, and with the object of generally improving the construction of devices of the above class, my invention is embodied in preferable form in the device hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In these drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view in elevation showing the box open and with a number of padlocks mounted thereon in display position; Fig. 2, a plan view with the parts in the same position; Fig. 3, a fragmentary inner view of the cover or lid, showing the articles held in place against the lid of the box by engagement with retaining members; Fig. 4., a vertical section looking from the side and showing the lid closed with the attached padlocks hanging down into the compartments; Fig. 5, a vertical section on the line m-w of Fig. 1; Fig. 6, a front detail view of the supporting member for the articles; and Fig. 7, a detail side view of one of said members.

In all figures, similar letters of reference represent like parts.

of flexible retaining members 3 secured to the sides of the lid and the body respectively and adapted to hold the lid in a substantially upright position but permitting it to be slightly inclined so that it will remain in open position. i

The body of the box is divided by partitions t and 5 into vertical compartments 6. In each of these compartments may be placed, if desired, a number of articles, those in each compartment differing in type from those in the other compartments. Secured to the lid of the box by any suitable means of connection are several series of supporting members arranged in horizontal rows, and with the members of the respective rows positioned opposite the respective compartments in the body of the box. These members preferably consist of closed staples or eyes 7 through which is adapted to be passed a part of the article to be displayed. These members are particularly designed to cooperate with padlocks, the shackle of the padlock being adapted to be passed through the staple and locked in engagement with the catch of the padlock so as to hold the latter in such engagement with the staple that it cannot slip off therefrom and can be released from the staple only by unlocking the shackle. Each staple member is provided on its front face with an open hook 8 preferably formed integral with the staple by striking out a tongue from the face of the staple. These hooks are adapted to receive a key or keys corresponding to the padlock secured to the corresponding staple.

Extending transversely of the lid and pro jecting from its under surface are strips 9 having a front face portion 10 extending substantially parallel to the face of the lid and connected to and spaced from the lid by a connecting portion 11 extending substantially at right angles to the face of the lid. The members thus formed are so arranged that the lower portions of the padlocks or similar articles are adapted to be alined therewith. These strip members may be utilized as ledges either to hold the padlocks or similar articles away from the face of the lid so as to more effectively display the articles shown in Fig. 1, or they may be employed as retaining members by slipping the lower edges of the padlocks or similar articles under the outer flange 10 of the strips, and these strips being spaced from the face of the lid sufliciently to receive the article between the same and the lid the articles may be prevented from swinging forward when the box is closed and will be held firmly against the face of the lid.

The staple is of such size and so located relatively to the strip members as to correspond to the size of the articles to be supported and to enable the latter to be slipped under the edge of the retaining strip as described. These strips are preferably made of some flexible material, such as cardboard or pasteboard for the purpose of enabling the articles to be more readily inserted behind the front flanges of the strips.

Then it is desired to use the box merely for the purpose of receiving and displaying only the articles adapted to be carried by the lid itself the articles are permitted to hang outside of the retaining strips and when the box is closed by the lid the articles will swing freely downward into the compartments (3 respectively corresponding thereto as shown in Fig. 4-. When it is desired to fill these compartments with sets of different articles, however, the sample articles corresponding in position to those in the respective compartments and displayed on the lid are engaged with the retaining strips as shown in Fig. 3 so that when the lid is closed the articles will be retained against the face of the lid so as not to interfere with the other articles in the compartments.

In the use of the device in connection with padlocks for which the invention is particularly designed, the padlocks are mounted on the lid by passing their respective shackles through the corresponding staple members and snapping the shackles into place. Keys corresponding to each padlock are then hung upon the hooks 8. To remove the padlocks a key or keys are removed from the hook and the shackle unlocked, whereupon the padlock may be released from its supporting staple. If desired the compartments 6 may be made of sufficient length from front to rear to permit a set of padlocks or other articles to be placed in each compartment and the sample articles attached to the lid to depend between the front edges of said sets and the front wall of the box, thus avoiding securing the displayed articles against the middle of the box by engagement with the retaining strips.

Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a display box, the combination of a body, partitions in said body dividing the same into a series of compartments, a lid for said body adapted to close the upper end of the latter, and a plurality of article supporting members applied to that surface of the lid which is disposed toward the interior of the body when the latter is closed, said supporting members being located in alinement with the respective compartments of the body and adapted to loosely suspend the articles, whereby the same may hang within thev compartments when the lid is closed, and assume a position in contact with the lid that the lid may form a support for the articles when said lid is open.

2. In a display box, the combination with a body having a series of compartments, of a lid to close the open upper end of the body, hinged to the body at one edge, and a plurality of article suspending clips located and spaced in correspondence with the respective compartments of the body, on that surface of the lid which is disposed toward the interior of the body when the box is closed, the articles loosely engaging the clips whereby when the lid is open the same may be disposed in the plane of the lid and in contact with the same, the articles when the lid is closed assuming a position substantially at right angles to the lid and being housed within the compartments of the body.

3. In a display box, the combination with a body portion and a lid therefor, of article suspending members on the inner surface of said lid adapted to engage certain portions of the articles, and retaining means on the lid adapted to engage portions of the articles other than those portions engaged by said suspending members, to hold the articles against the surface of the lid; substantially as described.

l. In a display box, the combination with a body portion, of a lid connected thereto, a transverse strip secured to said lid on the inner surface of the latter and having a retaining portion spaced from the surface of the lid and to engage the article to be displayed, and supporting members for said articles secured to said lid, substantially as described.

5. In a display box, the combination with a body portion, of a lid connected thereto, a plurality of article supporting members, and a common retaining strip extending transversely of the lid and cooperating with said article supporting members to retain said articles against the surface of the lid, substantially as described.

6.
