ATTACHMENT FOR BROOMS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,127, dated January 12,1892. Application filed June 17, 1891. Serial No. 396,536. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN B. AUEULDIsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new land useful Improvements in Attachments for Brooms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in attachments for brooms, and has for its object to compress the broom-straws near the bottom of the broom and render the broom more effective in sweeping.

The nature of the invention consists in providing a band of suitable material to surround the lower part of the broom-straws, whereby the straws are prevented from spreading, and in means whereby the band may be maintained in position and be prevented from slipping either up or down, as will appear by reference to the drawings formingapart of this specification, in which similar letters indicate similar parts.

Figure l is a View showing the band as applied to the broom on its fiat or broadest side and the manner in which it is secured to the broom-handle. Fig. 2 is a view taken on the edge Ot' the broom, showing the band and its connections whereby it is secured to the broom-handle. Fig. 3 is a detached View of the attachment, showing its variousparts in detail. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the broom-handle on the line of Fig. 1, showing the means provided to prevent the attachment from slipping up or down.

The attachment is preferably made of wire to secure lightness, cheapness, and strength.

The letter A indicates broom-straws. B is the band, which may be either adjustable, so as to lit brooms of different sizes, or solid. If adjustable, the band is provided with a hook C and with rings or loops D. From the band B extendv wires B and O', respectively, terminating in twisted rods or wires E and E on opposite sides of the band. These wires are connected with the wires G and G. The wire G is bent so as to conform to the curvature of one-half of the broom-handle H and is provided with projecting points g g and Z.

The point g engages with the loop K of the wire G and the point g engages with the bar L, as shown in Fig. l, and by this means the wires G and G are attached to each otheron diametrically-opposite sides of the handle H. The point I enters one or the other of the holes h in the handle H and thereby prevents the attachment from slipping either up or down.

The plurality of holes 7L enables the device to be adjusted either higher up or lower down on the broom-straws as the broomwears and for dilerent-sized brooms.

The construction of the attachment may be varied in detail without departing from my invention.

Having described my invention, what I desire to claim and to secure by Letters Patent is l. The combination, with a broom having its handle provided with a series of holes, of the wires embracing said handle, one of the wires having projecting points and the other wire a loop, bar, and connecting-hooks so arranged that when the wires are placed on diametrioally-opposite sides of the broom-handle one of the points may enter one of the series of holes therein and the other two points may engage, respectively, with the bar and the loop of the other wire on the opposite side of the handle and thereby maintain the wires l firmly in the position where they have been placed, for. the purposes herein described.

2. In combination with the wire having projecting points and the wire having a loop, bar, and connecting-hooks, the wires extending therefrom and connecting therewith the band surrounding the broom, the said band being provided with loops and a hook whereby the band may be adjusted to iit differentsized brooms and for the purpose herein described.
