UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
WVILLIAM. G. SGHAEFER, OF MANKATO, KANSAS.
CURRY-COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,690, dated August 23, 1887.
Application filed April 22, 188?. Serial No. 235,766. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM G. SOHAEFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mankato, in the county of Jewell, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in curry-combs; and among the objects of myinvention are to improve the mode of and simplify the construction, reduce the cost, and provide a strong, serviceable comb, that may be easily and conveniently handled.
With these general objects in View, the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a comb constructed in accordance Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective of one of the comb-bars, and Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the under surface of a novel casting employed in connecting the combbars and handle.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
The comb may consist of as many comb-bars as desired and of any ordinary construction.
A represents the bars, in this instance three in number, near each end of which are oppo sitelylocated perforations A.
The handle-frame B is formed of a single piece of wire, and comprises the convergent arms B and the forwardly-projecting parallel connecting bars or arms B extending to the end of the comb, and then upwardly curved, as at B, forming a loop where they meet and are twisted, as at B and connected with the ends of the frame, which are secured together by means of a socket formed in an ordinary handle, B
0 represents a malleable casting, by which the combsections are connected, and which by its formation is adapted to receive the arms B of the handle-frame, and thus rigidly secure the same upon the comb-sections. The casting 0 comprises straight connecting portions (3, at intervals upon which and correspond ing with the location and number of comb bars are formed lugs 0 which are longitudinally grooved, as at O, for the reception and retention of the arms B of the handle frame, and are either apertured for the reception of rivets,
said apertures corresponding with those in the V comb sections or bars, or formed with depending lugs or rivets O, for the same purposenamely, the securance of said casting to the comb-bars by passing through the apertures therein, after which said rivets are headed. Upon the outer edge of the bars B, and adapted to extend beyond the ends of the comb sec tions or bars, are formed knockers G which are oppositely located with reference to the lugs 0 Similar apertures or rivets, 0*, to those upon the lugs C may be formed in or upon the knockers G which rivets are passed through the aperture A nearest the end of the comb-bar, and headed, as before described.
By reference to Fig. 1, attention is called to the fact that not only is the comb as constructed capable for use by means of the handle B but by the peculiar and novel formation of the handle-frame it may be manipulated in several different waysthat is to say, that by reason of the raised portion 13 of the handleframe the hand of the operator may be passed under the same, and in a like manner may this be accomplished by passing the hand under the arched or raised and curved port-ion 13'.
Having described my invention and its op eration, what I claim is In a curry-comb, the combination, with the handle B and the handle-frame thereof, comprising the arms B B, the connecting-arms B, and the raised and twisted portions B, of the comb-bars A and the casting G, for connecting said handle and bars, the same comprising the lugs O, knockers C the intermediate handle receiving grooves O, and the straight connecting portions 0, substantially as specified.
'In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM G. SGHAEFER.
