COMBINED SWEAT SORAIPBRQAND CURRY 00MB. No. 348,067. Patented Aug. 24, 1886 Mew-J60)",
NITED- STATE-s ATE-NT "rrren.
WILLIAM SPEAK, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED SWEAT-SCRAPER AND CURRY-COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,067, dated August 24, 1886,
Application tiled March 11, 1886. Serial No. 194,830.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SPEAR, of Lynn, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in a lengths, combined with two hand-pieces, to
which the ends of the said flexible bands are connected, so that when the said hand-pieces are separated from each other the said bands are not parallel, but occupy different curves; also of two flexible bands of different lengths, and two hand-pieces,to which the ends of the said flexible bands are connected, combined with a locking device to lock the two handpieces together, to thus present two flexible loops as acting portions of the comb, all substantially as will be described.
Figure 1 is an under side view of an implement embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation, and Fig. 3 an edge view showing the parts separated and on a reduced scale.
In constructing the implement herein to be described, two flexible bands, a 1), preferably of metal, are employed, said bands being of substantially the same width, but of different lengths. One edge of each of the bands (1 b is serrated or toothed, as at c, and preferably the teeth will point or incline from the center of each band toward the hand-pieces.
The ends of the bands at b are placed in slots d, cut in the ends of two hand-pieces, of, and secured therein by rivets g, or by other suitable fastenings. The hand-pieces e f are so bent as to form a compound curve, so that when the flexible bands are extended and the hand-pieces separated they will conform to the hand of the operator, and so, also, to permit them, when brought together, to be grasped by one hand of the operator, the flexible bands in this latter instance forming two loops, as in Fig. 1.
N0 model.)
When the apparatus is extended, as in Fig. 3, or even less extended, one of the flexible bands, as a, is substantially straight, while the other band, 1;, forms a curve, and in no position of the handles are the bands parallel.
WVhen the implement is used as a card or comb, and with the handles either together or separated, the serrated edges of the bands will be used; but for a sweat-scraper the smooth edges will be used.
When the hand-pieces e f are brought together, the implement may be used by one hand as a curry-comb.
A locking device consisting of a loop, m, preferably of wire, is connected with one of the hand-piecesas e, for instancethe loop being of sufficient size to permit the other hand-piece, f, to be passed therethrough, the loop entering a groove, a. cut in the handpiece f, to thus firmly lock the two hand-pieces together.
It is obviousthat, if desired, the ends of the flexible bands may be connected upon opposite sides of the ends of the hand-pieces e f instead of at a common point, as herein described, Without departing from this invention.
By employing two flexible baudswhich are not parallel the pressure of the implement in use is more evenly distributed, and consequently is not so harsh at any one place.
Any other suitable locking device may be employed to lock the two hand-pieces together; or the same may be entirely omitted, the
hand-piece being held together by the operator.
I disclaim the inventions of United States Patent No. 202,769, and British Patent No. 7,193 of 1884.
I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined curry-comb and sweat-scraper, consisting of two flexible bands of different lengths, one edge of which is serrated, combined with two hand pieces of the shape of a compound curve, to the ends ofwhich the ends of theflexible bands are connected, substantially as de scribed.
2. Asa new article of mamlifacturaa curry- -comb consisting of two flexible bands of diferent lengths, one edge of which is serrated, combined with two hand-pieces, to the ends of which the ends of the flexible bands are connected, substantially as described, and a locking-device for holding the hand pieces toto this specification in thepresence of two subgether.
3. In an implement for grooming horses, two flexible bands of unequal lengths, combined with two compound-curve hand-pieces, to the corresponding ends of which the ends of the flexible bands are connected, substantial] y as described.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name :0
scribing witnesses.
WILLIAM SPEAR.
