To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL GUELICH, of 0ttawa, in the county of Franklin and State of Kansas, have invented anew and Improved Burglar-Alarm, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved burglar-alarm which is simple, durable, and compact in construction, can be readily carried about and set up in a room or other desired place, and arranged to instantly give an alarm in case the door or window of the room or other place is opened. The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims. l

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figurel is a front vi ew of the improvement as applied in a room, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the improvement.

The improved burglar-alarm is provided with a suitably-constructed casing A, open at the front and provided on its upper end with a hanger B, adapted to engage a hooked nail or other convenient projection in a room; or it may be engaged by a gimlet C, screwed into the wall of the room at the desired place. Within the casing A is secured a `bell D, adapted to be sounded by a striker E, fulcrumed on a rod F, secured in the casing. The lower end of the striker E is formed with a slot E', engaged by a crank-arm G, formed on a shaft II, mounted to turn in suitable bearings in the casing A and provided on its outer end with a handle I. Un the shaft H is secured or formed adrum J, arranged within the casing A and on which is adapted to be wound a cord or rope K, passing through an opening A in the bottom of the casing A. The end of the rope or cord K is connected with a weight L, preferablyin the shape of a ball, the said weight being also connected with one end of a string N, preferably a black silk' thread fastened on a gimlet O, adapted to be screwed into the door, window, or other place, so as to stretch the string across the path likely to be taken by a burglar or other unauthorized person. f

rlhe device is used as follows: The casing A is secured to a suitable part of theroom or other place, as described, and the cord or rope K is wound up on the drum J, the weight L being placed in the bottom of the casing, as is plainly indicated in Figs. l and 2. The string N, connected with the weight, is stretched across the path of the burglar, the gimlet O being screwed in the door, window, or other article, so that the string N is taut, as is plainly illustrated in Fig. l. Now when the burglar moves against the almost invisible cord or string N then the latter pulls on the weight L, so that the weight is pulled off of its resting-place in the casing A and falls down, thereby pulling on the cord or rope K,

so that the drum .I is revolved. The revolving of the drum .I causes a rotation of the shaft H, which, by its crank-arm G, imparts a swinging motion to the striker E, so that the ball on the striker sounds the bell D, thus giving an alarm. It will be seen that the bell is sounded until the weight L in its descent has completely unwound the cord or rope from the drum .I or has reached the floor. It will further be seenV that the device is very simple and durable in construction and can be readily carried about in a trunk or valise to be conveniently set up in a room in a hotel or other place.

IE the gimlet O is secured on a door or window and the burglar in order to make an entrance opens the door or window, then a pull is exerted on the string N and the weight displaced, so that the alarm is sounded, as above described.

I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent-n 1. In a burglar-alarm, the combination, with a casing, a bell in the casing, a pivoted striker, a drum, and means for actuating the striker from the drum, of a cord or rope wound on the drum,a Weight connected to said cord or rope and resting normally in the casing, and a string or cord connected to the weight and by which the weight iswithdrawn from and resting normally on the bottoni of the the casing to actuate the drum,substanta.lly
