Description
RICHARD TEIOHMANN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
URGLAR ALARlVl.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,724, dated October 23,1888.
Application filed December 9, 1887. Serial No. 257,417. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD TEIOHMANN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved burglar-alarm that is operated by the turning of the knob and either applied to the door or made portable, the alarm being of simple, cheap, and effective construction; and the invention consists of a burglaralarm that comprises a bell, a fixed spindle, a sleeve mounted on said spindle, a spiral spring attached to the spindle and sleeve, a clapper pivoted to an eye of the sleeve, a string which is wound around the sleeve and provided at the opposite end With'a hook, so that by pulling the hook the string is unwound and the spring set to tension, while when the hook is released the return of the spring to its normal position turns the sleeve, operating the clapper in turning the sleeve so as to ring the bell.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent two different modifications of my improved burglaralarm, shown as applied for use. Figs. 3 and 4 represent, respectively, a front elevation with a part broken away and a vertical transverse section of the alarm shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of the alarm shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My improved burglar-alarm may either be used by being permanently attached to the door or door-casing or by being made portable, so as to be carried along in the trunk in traveling. The main elements employed in the construction of the alarm are the same in both constructions.
The alarm consists of a bell, a, that is mounted on a frame, or directly attached to a spindle, b, as shown in Fig. 8. The spindle b is either mounted on a base piece, 0, which is screwed to the door-casing, as shown in Figs.
1 and 3, or directly to the door by means of a threaded shank, screw-nut, andjam-nut, as shown in Fig. 5. On the spindle b is mounted a cylindrical sleeve, d, between which and the spindle is arranged a spiral spring, 6, one end .of which is attached to the spindle, while the other end is attached to the sleeve, as shown in the drawings. To the sleeve 62 is applied, by means of a fixed eye, cl, a loosely-swinging clapper, e, which strikes the bell quickly when 5 5 the sleeve rotates on the spindle. A string, f,
is attached at one end to the sleeve and wound around the same and provided at its outer end with a wire hook, f. The string fis guided either by a suitable eye or by a hole in the 60 body of the bell.
The alarm may be used in different ways, either by attaching it permanently to the door or other point of support or by placing it on the floor, pulling out the setting string, and 6 applying the hook to the door-knob in such a manner that by the least turning of the knob the hook slips oft and permits the spring to turn the sleeve, rewind the string, and ring the hell. In this manner a stationary or portable c burglaralarm of simple, cheap, and effective construction is obtained, which can be readily set in position for use, and which resets itself by the simple act of pulling the string into the required position without the use ofa windingkey or other device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination ofabell, a fixed spindle, a rotary and spring-actuated sleeve mounted SC on said spindle, a clapper hung to an eye of the sleeve, a settingstring attached to the sleeve, and asetting-hook applied to the outer end of the string, said setting-hook being adapted to engage the knob of the door and 8 release it when the knob is turned, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a hell, a spindle, a loose sleeve on said spindle, a spiral spring connected to the spindle and sleeve, a clapper 0 applied to an eye of the sleeve, a setting-string attached. to the sleeve, and a setting'hook attached to the outer end or" the cord, said setting-hook being adapted to engage the knob of adoor and release it when the knob is turned, 5 substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD TEIOHMANN.
