Description

P. W. PICK. BURGLAR ALARM. APPLICATION FILED AUG.3, 1920.
1,371,051, Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
g Q WM w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
Application filed August 3, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL WILLIAM PICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar- Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of burglar alarms which is operated by the turning of a door knob and it has for its objects the provision of, first, improved means for suspending the alarm from the collar of the door knob so that the device may be readily applied to a door knob; and, second, improved alarm controlling trip means adapted for easy attachment to the door knob collar and for actuation when the door knob is turned either way, to thereby set off the alarm.
The present burglar alarm is portable, light and small, and the improvements embodied therein obviate the necessity of using screws or other fastenings to attach the alarm to the door jamb, thereby overcoming a defect heretofore incident to those burglar alarms which are actuated by the turning of the door knob.
The invention is set forth fully hereinafter and is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1, is a view showing the alarm in use, suspended from a door knob collar, the latter being in section;
Fig. 2, is an enlarged detail vertical section of the alarm, certain parts being broken away; 1 "i Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail side elevation, showing the alarm applied to the door knob collar; and
Fig. 4, is a detail perspective of the clamp.
The alarm mechanism is inclosed in a relatively thin, fiat shell 1. One of my improvements resides in foldable, oppositely facing, suspending wire hooks 2, 3, which are adapted to be hooked over the collar of a door knob as shown, for instance, in Figs. 1 and 3, to thereby suspend the alarm from the door knob, and obviate the necessity of employing screws or other fastenings. My invention thus does away with any marring of the door or door jamb, and as inventions of this character are particularly adapted for use by travelers and traveling salesmen, the invention prevents serious deface- Specification of Letters Patent.

ment of doors and door jambs of bed rooms in hotels where devices of this character are liable to be used.
The shell 1 contains a bell or gong 4 and a clockwork having a spring drum 5, winding key 6, escapement wheel 7 and pallet 8 carried by a shaft 9 which is provided with a bell clapper 10 and detent 11. A trip lever 12 is pivotally carried by the frame of the clockwork at 13 and has lip 14 adapted to engage the detent 11 when said trip lever is in its intermediate or Vertical position, thereby holding the alarm in silent condition. When, however the trip lever is swung in one direction or the other the detent 11 is released, whereupon the alarmsounds.
To actuate the trip lever 12 by the turning of the door knob, there is provided a clamp 15 which has fingers 16 which straddle the upper end of the lever. The clamp is provided with a screw and nut 17 thus affording means whereby said clamp may be secured to the collar of the door knob.
Having secured the clamp to the collar of the door knob, with the lever 12 between the fingers 16, and the parts having been adjusted so that with the alarm suspended from the door knob by the hooks 2, 3, the detent 11 is engaged by the lip 1A, the alarm is then ready to sound when the knob is turned in one direction or the other. Whichever way the door knob may be turned, the fingers 16 will swing the lever 12, thereby releasing the detent 11, whereupon the alarm will sound.
What I claim is:
1. A burglar alarm provided with independent foldable hinged hooks for suspending it from a door knob, said hooks being independently foldable against the sides of the alarm in combination with means independent of the hooks controlling the alarm and adapted for actuation by the door knob.
2. A clock-work burglar alarm having spring actuated escapement means for operating the alarm and provided with a detent, and a trip lever cooperating with the detent and adapted to swing in opposite directions so that the detent will be released and the alarm sounded when the lever is swung in either direction from its position of engagement with the detent, a clam adapted to be carried by the door knob co lar for operating the trip lever, and foldable hinged hooks carried by the alarm is moved in one direction or the other, and adapted for suspending said alarm from a an independent clamp secured to the door 10 door knob, said hooks being independent of knob collar, said clamp being provided With the trip lever. means for engaging the lever and serving 3. A burglar alarm having means for its to cause sounding of the alarm Whatever Way suspension from a door knob, a pivoted trip the door knob may be turned. lever carried by the said alarm and adapted In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 15 to cause the alarm to sound when said lever PAUL WILLIAM PICK.
