- PATENT QFFIGE.
ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,337, dated December 18, 1877; application filed September 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARLIN S. BOLT, of Elmira, in the county of Ohemung and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my burglar-alarm. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View 5 and Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are detail views thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a portable burglar-alarm, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents a box or case, of any suitable "dimensions, provided with a lid or cover, B,
hinged thereto, and fastened by a hook, lock and key, or any other suitable fastening device.
1n the bottom of the box or case A, upon a stud, a, is fastened a bell or gong, G. .D represents a hammer for striking said bell, attached to a pivoted arm, I), which is actuated by a spring, d, the arm passing through a guide-staple, c, to limit its movement. On the end of the hammer D is formed a hookshaped projection, h, which, when the hammer is drawn back, is held by the lower end of a lever, G, pivoted to the back of the box A.
By raising this lever to a vertical position a tongue or lug, i, on its lower end engages with the hook h to hold the hammer drawn back, the lever being held by means hereinafter described, and when released or moved in either direction the hammer is relieved from the lug i, and the spring 01 throws the hammer forcibly against the bell to sound the alarm.
In one corner of the box A, in a frame, E, is mounted a spool, H, around which is wound a cord or wire, m, one end thereof being fastened to the spool, and the other end provided with a ring, n.
The spool H is so arranged in its frame that there will be considerable friction on the spool to prevent the cord or wire from unwinding without a very considerable strain thereon.
To use this burglar-alarm, the box A is placed in any convenient position in the room, the cord or wire m unwound and passed around the room in such a manner as to cross all the windows and doors therein, and close to the same, said cord or wire being suspended at proper intervals by links I I, fastened by means of screws 19.
Where any acute angles occur of doors or windows, the link I is suspended by a springhook, J. The lever G is then raised, and the hammer drawn back to be caught by the lug i on the lower end of the lever, when the ring a in the end of the cord or wire m is placed over the upper end of the lever, and the spool H turned, by means of a crank, until the tension of the cord or wire m will be equal to that of a spiral spring, L, connected to the lever, and thus hold the lever in an upright position.
It will readily be seen that any further strain upon the cord or wire, or any slacking of the same, will turn the lever on its pivot, and at once release the hammer, which then sounds the alarm.
In the box or case A is formed a chamber or receptacle, A, for storing the crank R, links I, and spring-hooks J.
In place of the links, I may use pulleys S, moimted upon pins projecting from metal straps P, as shown.
The entire apparatus, when closed, is small, and takes up but little room, so that it can be carried in a carpet-bag, valise, or even in the pocket.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a burglar-alarm, the combination with the bell or gong G, of the spring-ham. mer D, provided with the hook h, and the lever G, provided with the lug or projection In testimony that I claim the above I have '5, substantially as and for the purposes set hereunto subscribed my name in the presence forth. of two witnesses.
2. The combination of the hell 0, hammer D, lever G, with spring L, and the cord or wire m, provided with the ring n, wound upon a friction-spool, H, suspended by links I, and Witnesses:
connected to the lever G, all substantially as L. D. HUBLBUT,
and for the purposes herein set forth. R. H. RANSOM.
