For the purpose of illustration the invention is shown as applied to a container of the safe deposit box type, and the alarm .vmcchanism is *operatively connected With a sliding drawer therein, although it will be obvious from the following description that the invention could as well be used in connection with the doors of safes and the like. In the present instance the alarm mechanism is shown as fitted within a chamber separated from' the sliding drawer, although with very slight modification it could be directly applied to the drawer or any other closure, and the operation would be substantiallythe same in any case. 1
Referring to the drawings, the character A. designates ajsafe deposit box having a. sliding drawer` 12- mounted in the front l thereof. A swin ing arm, 3 is mounted upon the inside o the front 1, and in the present instance is .shown as rigidly connected with the spindle 4 of a conventional permutation lock 5, the object of connecting 3 to a permutation lock being to prevent movement of 'thev arm unless the correct combination of the lock is vthe box, near the top known to the operator. No claim is made to the construction of the permutation lock, however, and'any conventional construction of lock, such as a dial lock, a push pin lock, or a knob pin lock, may be used, the only requisite being that the arm 3 be operatively connected with the lock so that the arm may be swung upwardly when the lock is manipulated in the proper manner. It 1s contemplated to use the lock described in my copending application filed November 17, 1916, Serial No. 131,876, which lock embodies a swinging tumbler similar to the swinging arm 3 as illustrated by Fig. 2. A coil spring 8 normally tends to pull the arm 3 downwardly. to a substantially horizontal position, the downward movement of the arm being limited by a stop pin 9. An opening 10 extends entirely through the front 1 of the box, the said opening being of a diameter slightly greater than the index tinger of the human hand, the said opening providing access to the -alarm mechanism within the box, and the said alarm mecha nism can be successfully operated by an authorized person merely by the insertion of the index finger throughthis opening an a proper manipulation of certain of the parts of the mechanism by the finger, as will be hereinafter more fully described. This cover is normally locked against opening by means of the latch 111 mounted upon the front of the box. The said latch 14 comprises a substantially horizontally disposed lever 14 which is pivotally mounted at an intermediate point in its length at 14 to the inside' of the front'of thereof. One end of the lever 14a is provided with a hooked inger 14 adapted to engage an eye 14 which is secured to the inside of the top D of the box. The other end of the lever 14a has pivotally connected thereto a substantially vertically disposed rod 14@y which is slidably mounted in a guide member 14. secured to the front of the box. he lower end of the rod 14 extends downwardly into the chamber C, and is provided with a returned-finger piece 14g. A coil spring lllinormally tends to force the hooked,v finger 14 into engagement with the eye 14d to lock the cover D, and the Cover can not be unlocked until the rpposite point on Legame drawer 12 is opened, when a downward pull upon the finger piece 14g will withdraw the hooked finger 14 to unlock the cover.
It is contemplated to provide means whereby the alarm mechanism may be re moved from the box A as an entirety, for the purpose of facilitating the adjustment and repair thereof, and in the prsent 1n- `stance the mechanism is shownv as mounte within a sub-container E which comprises a bottom 15 and sides 16. A drum 17 is mounted within this sub-container E so as to rotate about a vertical axis, the said drum being provided with heads 18 which carry the pivot studs 19, the pivot stud on the lower head being journaled within the bottom of the sub-container E, while the stud 19 on the upper head is journaled within a transverse bar 20 which has its opposite ends secured to the sides 1G. T he heads of the drum are connected by a. plurality of slats 21, the said slats being shown as arranged in spaced intervals about the periphery of the drum, so as to provide longitudinal openings 23 therein. A plurality of threaded openings 24 are provided in the upper head of the drinn, the said openings being arranged in a peripheral row, and one of said openings being disposed in substantial alinement with each of the openings Z3 in the periphery of the drum. A threaded catch pin 25 is adapted to be screwed into any selected one of the openings 24, the ASaid pin being shown as constructed similarly to a screw so as to bc easily and quickly removed from one opening and laced in another, as may be desired. ne or more knobs or projections 26 are arranged upon the longitudinal sides of the openings 23 in the periphery of the drum 17. the number of said knobs 2G being different upon each opening. lVhen the pin Q5 is inserted in any one of the openings E21. notice is taken of the number of knobs 26 in the opening 23 at a diainctrically opposite point onl the drum from the pin 25; so that when the drum is rotated in order to bring'the said opening 23 to the front of the box it will be known that the pin 25 is at a diamctrically the rear side of the drum.

The outer' end of the lever 27 is normally held in a position to clear the top of the pin, by means of a leaf spring 31 mounted thereunder upon the transverse bar 29. The pivot bolt 28 is slidably mounted within a slot 32 in the transverse bar 29, and at the rear end of said slot by means of a spring 33 acting upon a loop 34 connected to the pivot bolt.

practically impossible for the ldirection the index bar 56 is When the worm shaft 58 is rotated in a clockwise direction with the index arm in the position indicated by Fig. 3, the index bar will be moved toward the center of the box A, and after it has been mo ved a suiiicient distance the clapper ball 62 will be pulled out of the bell 63 and over the upper edge thereof, and then owing to the action of gravity will fall so as to strike the side of the opposite bell 63, thereby producing a ringing sound. The two bells 63 are of different resonances, and an authorized operator will know by the sound produced by the falling of the clapper ball in which being moved. As the index bar is moved, one of the arms of the yoke 59 will engage the operating lever 27, so as to move the same in the same direction. It will be noted from reference to lEig. 3 that one of the arms of the yoke 59"'is nearer the index bar 56 than the other, and that therefore the said arm of the yoke will come into engagement with the lever i 27 sooner than would the opposite arm of position on the yoke were the index bar in the corresponding position on the opposite side of the center of the box.
With the yoke 59 arranged as shown in Fig. 3, movement of the index bar 56 toward the center of the box until the clapper ball 62 falls from the bell with which it is now in engagement to the other bell, will bring the opening 30 of the lever 27 in exactly the right position to engage the pin 25 on the drum 17 to operate the bolts' 38. It will be obvious, however, that were the clapper ball 62 in engagement with the opposite bell and the indexbar 56 in a corresponding position, that movement of the index bar until the clapper 'ball struck the other bell would not bring the opening 30 of the lever 27 quite up to the proper position, owing to the dierence in the distance of the other arm of the yoke from the index bar. With the construction described it will be seen that the action may be reversed by merely adjusting the yoke 59 to the proper thee index bar 56.
For the purpose of rotating the worm shaft 58, a pulley wheel 64 is rigidly applied thereto, said pulley wheel being connected by a exible belt 65, such as a coil spring belt, to a pulley 66 rigidly connected to a transversely disposed shaft 67 arranged adjacent the opening 10 in the door. This shaft has its ends journaled in bearings 68 on the sides 16 of the container E -and is provided for a portion of its length nearest the opening 10 with an enlarged and knurled portion 69 to facilitate the rotating thereof by the finger.
Means have been provided whereby the lever 27 can not be Jforced into engagement with the pin 25 even though the pin 25 and lever 27 had been :by accident actuated into the proper positionsnnless theeoribination of the permutation lock 5 is known to the operator. A horizontally disposed lever 70 has one end thereof pivotally vconnected at 71 to one side 16 of the container E, and is provided at a oint adjacent the center of the drum 17 with a laterally projecting enlargement 72, the said enlargement 72 being normally forced by a spring 73 to a point under the end of the lever 27 so that the lever will strike the same and be pre-vented from engaging the piu 25. The free end of the lever is connected by a link 7a to one arm of a bell crank lever 75 pivotally mounted upon a vertically disposed standard 76, the opposite arm of said lever being adapted to normally engage the top of the swinging arm 3 on the door 1. When the combination of the lock 5 is known and the lock is operated in the proper manner so as to raise the swinging arm 3, the upward movement of the lswinging arm is transmitted to the bell crank lever 75 and link 74: so as to withdraw the enlarged portion 72 of the lever' 70 from b eneath the end of the operating lever 27. After the drum 17 has been rotated to bring the pin 25 into the proper position, and the lever 27 has been moved into proper position to Lengage the pin, the lock 5 is operated so as to raise the arm 3 and withdraw theD enlarged portion 72 of the lever 70 from -beneath the end of the lever 27, after which the lever 27 may be forced into engagement with the pin and the. drum rotated 1n the required manner to withdraw the bolts 38.
For the purpose of soundinu a series of alarms as the drum 17 is rotated so as to signal the unauthorized tampering with the safe deposit box, a gear wheel 7 7 is journaled between the bottom of the container E and a transverse bar 78, the teeth of the said gear wheel meshingV with the openings 23 in the drum 17. An alarm bell is mounted on the top of the transverse bar 78, said alarm bell y79 being sounded by rotation of the gear wheel. No claim is made to this bell,itbeing of conventional construction and including a gear wheel 80 rigidly connected to the .pivot stud of the gear wheel 77, said gear `wheel 80 meshing with a pinion 81 which is rigidly connected with a gear wheel 82 which in turn meshes with a pinion 83 rigid with ,a shaft 84 carrying the conventional clappers 85. As the gear wheel 77 is rotated by'rotation of the drum 17 `the. clappers 85 are actuated in the usual manner to strike the bell 7 9 to sound an alarm. A pair of gongs 86 are rigidly secured to the sides 16 of the container E, and a pair of spring strips 87 are secured adjacent thegongs, one strip for each gong, the said strips serving as clappers for the gongs. The free ends of the spring strips 87 project into the path of the teeth of the gear wheel 77, and as the gear wheel 77 is rotated the spring strips are rst sprung back and then released to strike the ing lever or the gong-'e as the teeth pass by the ends of the strips.
A large gong S8 is arranged at the top of the box A and immediately under the cover D thereof, and a-clapper 89 therefor is rigidly secured to the upper end or' a vertically Yisposed elapper shaft 90, the lower end of which is rotatably received Within a vertical bearing sleeve 91. An actuating arm 92 projects from the clapper shaft into engagement with the gear wheel 77, through an openingI in the bearingl sleeve 91, A spring 93 has one end thereoir connected to this actuating arm, and the other end thereof to the bottoni of the container E, said spring normally forcing the clapper y99 into engagement with the gong 98. As the gear vided in one side of the box A. The
Wheel 77' rotates the teeth. thereof engage the'actuating arm 92 of the chipper sha-tt 90 to force the elapper 89 away from the gong, and as the teeth pass by the actuating arm the spring 93 acts to quickly bring the clapper 89 back into engagement with the gong 88, so as to produce a loud sound. It will thus be seen that each time the drum 17 is rotated a distance of; one opening 23, one of the gongs 86 and 88 will be sounded, `and that when the drum 17 is rotated rapidly all of the gouge S6 and 89, and the bell 79 will be sounded, the gongs in rapid succession and the bell 79 continuously.

The clappers 103 are brosch?, into engagement with a bell 105 the 'drawer is opened and closed.
To found `an alarm when the box A is move 4 from a support, an actuating pin 106 is slidebly mounted in a bearing 107 se- ,.actuating slide 113 'which is connected to lment incident thereto cured to the side of the box A, said pin being provided With a reduced inner end portion 108 which passes through an elongated slot 109 in the ree'end oit a lever 110 pivotally mounted at one of its ends at 111 to the end ot the bon A. when the bonr is not resting upon a support, and is forced into this position with the outer ent 'thereof projecting beyond the bottom of the bor by means of a coil spring 12. The-lever engages at an intermediate point in its length a bell actuating slide 113, the said slide being bfurcated, and one of the arms of the bifurcation provided with a rack 11eL which meshes with a gear 115 rotatably mounted upon a pivot pin 116, the said gear Wheel 115 being provided on its upper side with a pawl 117 which engages a ratchet 118 loosely mounted on Vthe pivot pin and which caries the conventional clappers 119. When the actuatin slide 113 Vis forced upwardly the pawl n? Slips by sie teeth effet@ ratchet ne, although when the actuating slide 113 is moved downwardly, or out of the bell 105, the pawl 117 positively engages the ratchet 118 so as to rotate the clappcrs 119 to sound. the bell 105 in the usual manner. The actuating slide 113 is normally forced outwardly y means of a spring 120. When the box A with the pin 106 in the position shown by Fig. 7 is set upon a support, the lever 110 is forced upwardly, which .in turn forces the upwardly, and when the box is then picked up from the support the springs 120 4and 112 force the mechanism into the position shown sounding;l the bell 105.

Both of the compartments F and G are rovided with doors 132 for the purpose of inspecting the alarm mechanisms in the compartments, and any desired form of locking means may be provided therefor such as the `hooks and eyes 133, which can only be operated from the interior of the box.
It is desirable to provide means for automatically closing the opening 10 in the front of the box so as to prevent manipulation of the mechanism within the same, and thereby' preclude all possibility of an accidental successful operation of the mechanism to unlock the drawer 12. For this purpose a shutter 135 is shown as pivotally mounted upon thevinside of the front 1 of the box andadapted to swing across the opening 10. The shutter comprises a lever -pivotally mounted at an intermediate point in its length at 136 to the front of the box, the outer end of said lever being of an elongated arcuate formation, as indicated at 137, and provided with an opening 4138 disposed at substantially the center thereof, the said opening being of substantially the same diameter as the opening 10. When the shutter lever is swung to either side it covers up the opening 10 in the front of the box, although when the lever is disposed at its central position the opening 138 therein registers with the opening 10 so as to allow access to the mechanism in the box. The opposite end of the shutter lever 135 has pivotally connected thereto at 139 one end of a link member 140, the opposite end of said member being pivot-ally connected to a later-- ally projecting arm 141 rigidly connected to an operating lever 142, one end of which is ivotally connected lat 143 to the inside of the ront 1 of the b oX. This lever 142 extends along the inside of the front 1 and into the compartment F atone side of the box, being then offset at 144 and having a'pin and slot connection 145 with the outer end' of the alarm operating lever`110. `A coil spring 46 normally tends to. draw the outer end of the lever 142 into the position shown on the drawings. When the pin 106 is forced outwardly to its limit, as indicated by Fig. 7,
the lever 142 is operated to swing the shutter lever to one of its extremes, as indicated on the drawing, so as to close the opening 10, and when the pin 106 is forced inwardly to its limit, the lever 142 swings the shutter lever 135 to its opposite extreme so as to also close the opening 10. However, when the pin 106 is moved to an intermediate point in the length of its travel, the lever 142 is so operated as to swing the shutter lever 135 to its central position, thus bringing the opening 138 therein into registery with the opening 10. The shutter lever is guided in its movements by a guide ange 146 secured to the inside of the front 1 of the box and engaging the upper edge of the shutterlever, and this guide flange prevents the forcible displacement of the shutter lever from over the opening 10.
The pin 106 may be held in the required intermediate position in any suitable manner, although in the present instance a table or other support 150 is shown-as provided in the top thereof with av depression or recess 151, the depth of which is substantially onehalf of the length of the travel of the pin 106. When the box A is placed upon the support 150 and the pin 106 is allowed to drop into the opening 151 the shutter lever 135 is automatically swung to a central position so as to allow access to the mechanism throu h the opening 10.. In View of the fact that tige pin 106 is connected to the alarm operating lever 110 it will be obvious that any attempt 'to move the pin or the shutter 135 so as to open the opening 10, will be disclosed by the ringing of the alarm bell 105.
Having thus "described the invention, what I' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with a container having a closure therein and a lock mechanism 'for the closure, of means for intermittently sounding one alarmoduring each movement of the lock mechanism, and means for sounding a second and dilerent alarm continuously and simultaneously with the first mentioned alarm during a prolonged movement of the lock mechanism,..

The combination with a container having a closure therein and a lock mechanism for the closure, ofmeans for singly sounding an alarm instantly upon each slight movement o'l the lock mechanism, and means for intermittently sounding the same alarm during a prolonged movement of the lock mechanism.
3. The combination with a container having a closure therein and a lock mechanism for the closure, of means for sounding one alarm singly upon eac-h slight movement of the lock mechanism, mean for sounding thev same alarm intermittently'and successively during each material movement of the lock mechanism, and means for sounding a secisp ond and different alarm continuously during each material movement of the lock mechanism.
