NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS OI-IMEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CASH-DRAWER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 669,849, dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed June 19, 1900. Serial No. 20,850. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS OHMEN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cash- Drawer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved cash drawer or till which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to prevent unauthorized persons from obtaining access to the money upon pulling the drawer outward and at the same time give an alarm when said drawer is pulled out by the unauthorized person.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate cor responding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement with parts of the casing broken out and with the drawer and money-receptacle in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement with'the drawer partly pulled out and the money-receptacle in a locked innermost position. Fig. 3 is a sectional front view of the improvement on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same on the line 4 4 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 5 5 in Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of part of the alarm mechanism.
In a suitably-constructddcasing Ais mounted to slide a drawer B, in which is fitted loosely a money-receptacle O for receiving the money taken in by the operator. In the front end of the drawer B is mounted to turn a spindle D, carrying at its outer end a knob E, under control of the operator, for pulling out the drawer B and with itthe receptacle O whenever it is desired to place money in said receptacle or to remove money therefrom.
On the spindle D, inside of the front of the drawer B, is secured an arm D, adapted to engage a loop or catch 0, secured on the front end of the receptacle 0, so that when the spindle D is turned by the operator turning the knob E to engage the arm D with said catch then the receptacle O moves with the drawer outward or inward, according to the direction in which the knob E is moved. On the rear end of the receptacle O is secured a similar loop or catch 0 adapted to be engaged by a locking-arm F, attached to a disk G, having segmental slots G, engaged by screws or pins G attached toa block G secured to or forming part of the casing A at the rear end thereof.
In the center of the disk G is formed a polygonal aperture Gfladapted to be engaged by a correspondingly-shaped reduced portion D of the spindle D,near the rear end thereof, so that when the drawer B is in a closed position the said polygonal reduced portion ongages the polygonal aperture G and turns the disk G, according to the direction in which the knob E is turned. The arms D and F are so arranged relatively to each other that when the arm D moves in engagement with the catch 0 then the disk G is turned and the arm F moves out of engagement withthe catch 0 and when the knob E is turned in an opposite direction the arm D moves out of engagement with the catch 0, while the disk G is turned to move the arm F into engagement with the catch 0 Thus when the arm D is in engagement with the catch 0 and the arm F is out of engagement with the catch 0 and the operator pulls on the knob E, then the drawer B moves outward and with it the money-receptacle C; but when the arm D is out of engagement with the catch 0 and the arm F is in engagement with the catch C and the operator pulls the knob E, then only the drawer B moves outward and without pulling the receptacle O along, as the latter is held within the casing in a locked lowermost position by the arm F engaging the catch O Thus the money-receptacle 0 remains concealed when the drawer B is opened by unauthorized persons, it being understood that only the operator in charge of the drawer knows how to turn the knob E to make proper engagement or disengagement with or from the arms D and F and their catches O and 0 When the receptacle 0 is in a locked innermost position and the drawer B is pulled outward by an unauthorized person, then the said drawer actuates an alarm H,which, however, is not actuated, but is held in a locked position by the disk G at the time the arm F is out of engagement with the catch 0 The alarm H comprises a bell H and a striker H for the bell and secured on the escapementshaft I of an escapement 1, operating on an escapement-wheel 1 secured on a shaft 1 connected by a train of gear-wheels with a shaft J, turned in one direction by a spring K and in an opposite direction by a pulley L, on which winds and unwinds a cord L, extending along one side of the casing, at the inside thereof, over a pulley L attached to this side of the casing, near the front end thereof, the return run of the cord being secured to the inner or rear end of the drawer B. Now when the drawer B is pushed inward the cord L turns the pulley L and shaft J to wind up the spring K and set the train of gear-wheels in motion, causing the escapement-wheel I to actuate the escapement I and striker H and sound the alarm-bell H. When the drawer B is pulled in an outward direction, then the spring K rotates the shaft J in an opposite direction to again sound the alarm-bell H and rotate the pulley L in an opposite direction to wind up the cord L. Sounding of the alarm now only takes place when the disk G is in such a position that its arm F is out of engagement with the catch 0 and in order to control said alarm from the disk G a cord 1 is provided, secured at one end to the periphery of the disk G and extending over a guide-pulley I to be attached to a hook I on the escapement I. (See Fig. 6.) When the disk G is turned in the direction of the arrow a (see Fig. 4.) to move the arm F out of engagement with the catch 0 then the disk Gr pulls on the rope I and draws the escape ment 1 with one end down into a locking position with the teeth of the escapement-wheel 1 From the foregoing it will be seen that when the operator has closed the drawer and turned the knob E to move the arm D out of engagement with the catch 0 and cause the arm F to move in engagement with the catch 0 then an unauthorized person now pulling on the knob E and drawing the drawer B open, without, however, taking the money-receptacle along, causes an alarm to be sounded, as now the alarm mechanism is set in motion. Thus the unauthorized person not only cannot get hold of the money, but causes an alarm to be given whenever the drawer is opened by such unauthorized person.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cash-drawer, comprising a drawer, a money-receptacle arranged to move either with the drawer when the latter is pulled out or pushed in, or to remain stationary during such movement of the drawer, means carried by the drawer for locking the money-receptacle to the drawer, a locking device controlled by said means, for holding the moneyreceptacle against movement by the drawer, and an alarm controlled by said means and arranged to operate upon moving the drawer out without the money-receptacle.
2. A money-d rawer, comprising a drawer, a money-receptacle therein, and two locking devices for said receptacle and both controlled by the drawer-knob, one locking device serving to lock the money-receptacle to the drawer and the other locking device servin g to lock the receptacle to a stationary part, substantially as shown and described.
