UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS PRATT, OF MILTON JUN OTION, WISCONSIN.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.320,686, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed February 25, 1585. (Model) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MORRIS PRATT, of Milton Junction, Rock county, Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Burglar-Alarm, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mechanical burglaralarms; and the object of my invention is to simplify the construction of the alarm apparatus.
The invention consists in the combination, with aframe, of a shaft in the same and cranks on the ends of the same, a ball on one crank, a gong on the frame, a cord on the shaft, a weight on the cord, and a sliding latch or bolt on the frame, to which bolt or latch a cord is fastened, which extends to the doors and windows.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of my improved burglar-alarm, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
In the top of an oblong or other frame, A, a transverse shaft, B, is journaled, provided with a crank, O, on each end, one crank having a handle, D, and the other carrying a pivoted weight or ball, E, which is adapted to strike a gong, F, held on the side of the frame.
A cord, G, is secured to and wound on the shaft B, and to the lower end of the said cord a weight, H, is secured.
The frame A. is provided at its top with a ring, J by means of which it is hung from a hook, K.
The cord Gis wound on the shaft B, and the shaft is locked in place by a sliding latch, L, or bolt in one side of the frame, against which latch the handle-crank G is pressed by the action of the weight H.
To the latch or bolt L a cord, M, is secured, which extends to the several doors and windows, and with which it is connected.
hen a door or window is opened, the bolt or latch L is pulled in the direction of the arrow a and the handlecrank is released, thus permitting the weight H to descend and re- 50 volve the shaft 13 and the hammer-ball E to strike and sound the gong F once for each revolution of the shaft, and thus giving a loud and distinct alarm.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a burglar-alarm, the combination, with a frame, of a shaft journaled in the same and having a crank on the end of which a ball is secured, of a cord secured to the shaft, a weight secured to the cord, a gong on the frame, and a sliding latch or bolt in the frame adaptedto lock the shaft and prevent itfrom revolving, substantially as herein shown and described.
MORRIS PRATT.
