{No Model.) I I J. H4WALTERS. v BUR'GLAR ALARM. No. 577,154... I Patented Feb. 16,1897.
1 9111403 aeo 'nected by upright bars or bolts 3 4 5.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIc-E.
JAMES H. \VALTERS, OF HARLANSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS P. BROXVN, OF SAME PLACE.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,154, dated February 16, 1897. Application filed May 15, 1896. Serial No. 591.695. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES H. WALTE S, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harlansburg, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in burglar-alarms, the object of the same being to provide a simple and convenient alarm which maybe carried in the coat-pocket and be readily and quickly attached to and detached from any door or window.
The invention consists of an alarm of ordinary construction mounted in a suitable casing, means for attaching said casing to any door, a release-bar for the gong, and means connected with the door-knob whereby the alarm is released and the gong is sounded.
It also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved alarm, shown attached to a door. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same detached from the door. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the releasing mechanism and the means for attaching the same to the door-knob.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
My alarm device is made up of a casing having side plates 1 and 2, which are con- Between these plates the operative parts of my device are situated. These parts consist of the main shaft 6, having a turn-handle 7 upon its upper end and a cog-wheel 8 at a point intermediate between its ends. The said shaft also has connected to it the coil-spring 9, the outer end of which is attached to one of the uprights 5. The co -whee1'8 on the main shaft 6 meshes with a pinion 10 on a shaft 11, having a ratchet-wheel 12 thereon which engages the escapement 13 on the shaft 14, which latter shaft carries a hammer 15 for striking the gong 16. The mechanism just described forms no part of myinvention, the same being old and well known. Adjustably secured to the under side of the plate 1 is a strip 17, extending outwardly therefrom and formed with an opening 18 in its outer end. Through this opening 18 passes a screw-bolt 19, having laterally-extending arms 20 20 on its inner end and provided with a thumbscrew 21 at its upper end. This is provided for the purpose of securing the alarm mechanism to the door, to which it is applied by inserting the arms 20 into the keyhole-slot in said door and tightening the screw 21.
The shaft 14 is provided with a laterally-ex tending arm 22, which is normally held upward by the engagement of a flat spring 23, secured to the under side of the plate 1 of the casing. When the said arm is so engaged, the hammer 15 is held stationary and prevented from ringing the gong 16. The flange or upturned end of the spring 23 is adapted to be engaged by the sides of a score 24: in a reciprocating bar 25, moving in ways in the uprights 3 5 and connected at its outer end to a rod 26, having a spring-loop 27 upon its outer end which is adapted to fit over and closely engage the shank of the door-knob. The rod 26 is adapted to be lengthened or shortened in any suitable way.
In applying my alarm to any door it is merely necessary to insert the arms 20 into the keyhole-slot of the door and tighten the same by turning the screw 21. The rod 26 is then so adjusted that the spring-loop 27 upon its outer end will just fit over the shank of the door-knob, and when so adjusted the slightest movement of the door-knob will cause the rod 25 to be thrown in or drawn out, and throw the sides of the score 24 therein into engagement with the lower end of the spring 23, throwing the same out of engagement with the arm 22 on the shaft 14 and permitting the gong 16 to be sounded.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a door, of alarm mechanism made up of a casing, consisting of two plates secured by uprights, a gong, a hammer for said gong, a shaft upon which said hammer is mounted, a lateral arm on said shaft, a spring engaging said arm, a rod moving in suitable ways in two of said uprights, having a score at one point therein Whose curved sides are adapted to engage said spring, and connections between said rod and the handle of the door, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a door, of alarm mechanism therefor, the same consisting of a casing having two side plates secured by suitable uprights or bolts, a strip of metal extending outwardly from one of said plates, a bolt passing through the outer end of said strip, having arms on its inner end which are adapted to fit in the keyhole of said door, and a thumb-screw for tightening said bolt, a gong, a hammer therefor, a shaft upon which said hammer is mounted, a lateral arm on said shaft, and a spring for engaging said lateral arm, a release-bar moving in suitable ways in two of said uprights, having a score at one point therein whose curved edges are adapted to engage said spring, an adjustable rod upon the outer end of said release-bar, and a spring-clip upon the outer end of said rod whereby connection is made with the door-knob of said door, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
JAMES H. \VALTERS.
