KEY FASTENER.
No. 462,750. Patented Nov. 10, 1891.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EARL TUPPER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
KEY-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,750, dated November 10, 1891.
Application filed February 9, 1891, Serial No. 380,843. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL TUPPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvernents in Key-Guards. of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of key-guards of that character especially de signed to be used in connection with a key when the latter is in place within the lock for the purpose of securing said key, in order to prevent its being turned by nippers inserted in the key-hole from the outside of the door.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the device, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my device as securing the key within a door-lock. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the device detached. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section on the line a a: in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line .2 ,2, same figure.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a suitable sheet-metal plate of any approved form. In the central portion of this plate is formed a slot B, and intersecting said slot at right angles thereto is a depression or well O.
D represent threaded bolts that are tapped through the plate A near its opposite ends and are provided upon their outer ends with the milled heads D, by means of which said bolts may be turned, and upon their inner ends a button or plate E is swiveled, the faces of which should preferably be provided with some elastic material to prevent them from marring the door with which they come in contact in the operation of the device.
In practice, after the key is turned to lock the door, the plate is engaged with the head of the key F, as shown in Fig. 1, and the threaded bolts are then turned up against the door, thus causing the plate to recede there from and firmly lock the key-head in the recess or well 0 of the plate A, where it is held against the possibility of being turned by nippers or other tools inserted through the key-hole from the opposite side of the door.
The device will not be cumbersome, and can easily be carried in the pocket or valise by the traveling public and will be found very useful in looking their doors against intrusion.
hat I claim as my invention is 1. In a device of the character described, a plate provided with a central slot, a depression in said plate at the inner end of said slot and at right angles thereto, and threaded bolts passing through said plate, whereby the bow of a key may be retained in said depression, substantially as and for the purposes,
herein described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of the plate A, provided with the slot 13, depression 0, and the threaded bolts D, having swiveled buttons E upon their inner ends, the parts being constructed, arranged, and operated substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 28th day of November, 1890.
EARL TUPPER.
